Philippians 4:10-13
I rejoiced in the Lord greatly that now at length you have revived your concern for me. You were indeed concerned for me, but you had no opportunity. 11 Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. 12 I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. 13 I can do all things through him who strengthens me.
This coming Sunday, May 24, we will close our topic on Christian Contentment and bring everything into one final conclusion. See you there!
======================================================
Previously, we determined that Paulโs letter to the Philippians ought to be seen through the lenses of a deliberative hortatory โa letter sent by a person of authority to his spiritual family, whom he also sees as personal friends, with the intention of convincing or persuading them toward a course of action, by the use of teaching, setting of examples, pastoral care, and apologetics
We also concluded that financial issues within the church are real and part of how we live in oneness in the household of God. Feeling, thinking and practicing material care for our church mates especially in supporting our ministers of Godโs word is commanded by God and is glorifying to God. Where generosity is grounded upon the virtue of Christian Contentment.
In addition, we discovered that unlike Stoicism, Christian contentment does not deny human material needs and is not fixated on self-sufficiency. That Christian Contentment is dependency & satisfaction in God allowing us to escape the traps greediness & covetousness; knowing that what is truly essential is to have God, and who is truly rich โare those who are rich in service and generosity because they are contented in the LORD.
Lastly, the Christian life is not exempt from both the hardships & abundance, whether physical or spiritual. Rather it is through โgood and the badโ moments of life Jesus teaches Christians to be godly, and unbelievers to repent & believe. Christian Contentment is willingness to follow Christ wherever he leads us and being ready for anything because we are dependent and satisfied in God
