As we begin the Holy Week celebration with the commemoration of Palm Sunday, Caritas Philippines, the social action arm of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines (CBCP), calls on everyone to observe this holiest of all seasons and to journey with Jesus and with one another.
"We celebrate the Passion, Death, and Resurrection of the Lord during Holy Week, and one of the understandings of this observance is our imitation of the Lord who suffered, died, and rose again for the salvation of the world," said Bishop Jose Colin M. Bagaforo, President of Caritas Philippines. "This calls us to journey with Jesus and with one another, to be transfigured by His love and mercy, and to take our brothers and sisters with us and lead them to Him who transforms us."
In the midst of today's world where the pull of worldly pleasures is getting more attractive, the laxity of our practice of faith and morals, the excessive possession of and attachments to material things, the individualistic mindset, and indifference, Caritas Philippines also encourages everyone to participate in the Church's traditional Holy Week activities like Visita Iglesia and Via Crucis.
"Spiritual life is not limited solely to participation in the liturgy," he emphasized. "Our participation in the traditional activities of the Holy Week is one of our expressions of worship besides the liturgy. These expressions are for our personal spiritual nourishment and to be more intimate with Jesus, the Lord."
Moreover, Caritas Philippines urges everyone to take this time for reconciliation, renewal, and Alay Kapwa. The whole season of Lent, especially the Holy Week, is a time for spiritual purification, personal conversion, and preparation to worthily celebrate the salvation that Christ won for all.
Palm Sunday is celebrated annually as Alay Kapwa Sunday. Alay Kapwa is the annual Lenten evangelization and fundraising program of the Catholic Church that supports social services for the poor and in need. The Catholic Church's solidarity program helps fund the humanitarian, development, and advocacy programs of Caritas Philippines and the 85 Diocesan Social Action Centers.
"Our spiritual purification and personal conversion lead us to see, listen, and feel for our brothers and sisters in need," he said. "Reconciliation, Renewal, and are inseparable from one another. It is because these are all acts of Love, following the command of the Lord 'love one another' (Jn. 13:34)."
In closing, Bishop Bagaforo said, "Let us make this Holy Week meaningful and fruitful through our active participation in the Church's Celebration. May this season of Lent be a time of grace and transformation, leading us to a deeper relationship with God, and to love and serve our brothers and sisters in need."
