October, the Month of the Holy Rosary, brings several significant Marian celebrations that invite the faithful to honor the Blessed Virgin Mary and reflect on her constant call to draw closer to her Son, Jesus Christ.
On October 7, the Church celebrated the Memorial of Our Lady of the Rosary. As the month continues, here are the upcoming Marian celebrations to look forward to:
OCTOBER 11 — OUR LADY OF LA NAVAL DE MANILA
The devotion to Our Lady of La Naval dates back to the Spanish colonial period, when the image was brought to Manila in 1593. Devotion grew especially after the naval victories of the Spanish and Filipino forces against the Dutch in 1646, which were attributed to the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The image was later enshrined at the Santo Domingo Church in Intramuros and eventually transferred to its present home at the Santo Domingo Church in Quezon City.
Venerated as La Gran Señora de Filipinas, Our Lady of La Naval is one of the most revered Marian images in the Philippines. Her feast is celebrated annually on the second Sunday of October.
OCTOBER 12 — OUR LADY OF THE PILLAR
The devotion to Our Lady of the Pillar is traditionally associated with the Blessed Virgin Mary’s apparition to the Apostle St. James the Greater in Zaragoza, Spain. She is honored as the patroness of Hispanic peoples and is invoked as a sign of strength and steadfast faith.
In the Philippines, Our Lady of the Pillar holds a special place in the Diocese of Imus, where she is venerated as its principal patroness, as well as in Zamboanga City.
OCTOBER 13 — OUR LADY OF FATIMA'S FINAL APPARITION
October 13 marks the anniversary of the final apparition of Our Lady of Fatima to the three shepherd children—Lucia, Francisco, and Jacinta—in 1917. On that day, thousands gathered at Cova da Iria and witnessed what became known as the “Miracle of the Sun.” Mary’s message at Fatima called the faithful to prayer, penance, conversion, and the praying of the Rosary.
Three celebrations. Three Marian titles. One Mother who continually points us to her Son, Jesus Christ.
