REV. MSGR. WALTER DE ASIS CERBITO
(THE GOLDEN ERA: THE LEGACY OF A VISIONARY SHEPHERD)
A tribute to his Golden Sacerdotal Anniversary

Rev. Msgr. Walter De Asis Cerbito
Former Vicar General of the Diocese of Catarman

The history of Our Lady of the Assumption Parish in Lavezares is inextricably linked to the transformative presence of Rev. Msgr. Walter De Asis Cerbito. His tenure was not merely a period of administration, but a spiritual movement that reshaped both the landscape of our town and the souls of its people.

Finding the Roots of a Shepherd

While Monsi Walterโ€™s impact was deeply felt in Lavezares and across the Diocese, his journey began elsewhere. Recent historical research and inventory efforts within the Diocese of Catarman identified crucial details regarding his early life. Born in Brgy. Manering in Catubig, Northern Samar, Monsi Walter was the son of a schoolteacher, a background that likely fostered his lifelong dedication to formation and education. His pastoral roots were also deeply personal, leading back to a visit to his native barangay in Anongo, further mapping the journey of a man who would become a pillar of faith in Northern Samar.

The Journey into the Heart of Lavezares

Monsi Walterโ€™s mission in Lavezares began with a deep immersion into the lives of the parishioners through Community Organizing Preparatory Action Research (COPAR). I was then a highschool student and a newbie catechist, quietly following in his footsteps as he journeyed from one barangay to another. He led a dedicated teamโ€”including Ate Nancy Laodenio, Uncle Nonoy Martires, Uncle Etang Jesus Adtiatico and Kuya Rodel Cuyco, who was tasked with the meticulous work of constructing the historical timeline of Lavezares.

I watched in awe as he engaged in humble dialogue with the people. I remember the simplicity of those days: walking the long roads and sharing meals of "udong na may salmon" provided by the parishioners. It was in these moments of profound hospitality that Monsi Walter was not just researching our past, but actively writing the most significant chapter of our present.

Revitalizing the Spirit and the Sanctuary

Under his guidance, the parish experienced a total renewal. He reorganized the Basic Ecclesial Communities (BEC)โ€”our Digtoy na Katilingban san Singbahan (DKS)โ€”and reformed the pastoral councils in every chapel. He breathed new life into the Pastoral Ministry formation, specifically focusing on the Catechists, Parish Youth, Choir, Lay Ministers, Lilies of the Eucharist, and the Lavezares Knights of the Altar.

His vision for the parish was so expansive that he proposed the Church Expansion of Lavezares. A physical reminder of this ambitious vision stands today in the form of the posts donated by Manuel Ubas Sr., marking the beginning of a larger home for our growing community of believers.

Iconic Landmarks:

Also in his guidance and through the immense generosity of Atty. Ramon Cuyco and Family, two of the most famous religious landmarks in Lavezares were constructed:

The Risen Christ in Miol-biol (Brgy. Balicuatro): A towering image of hope that serves as a spiritual beacon for the community.

Nuestra Seรฑora de Salvacion (Lavezares Bay): Established to protect the townโ€™s fishermen and motorboats. The Patroness stands as a guardian for all those journeying between the island barangays and neighboring towns.

The Founder of Devotion

Msgr. Walterโ€™s impact was not limited to the physical or the social; also sought to center the community on the Triune God.

Devotion to the Blessed Holy Trinity: He introduced a profound spiritual focus on the mystery of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, teaching the parishioners to find unity in the Trinity.

Adorers of the Most Holy Trinity: This devotion was not fleeting; it blossomed into a formal religious organization. Through this group, he fostered a culture of perpetual adoration and deep prayer, ensuring that the "heartbeat" of the parish remained spiritually grounded.

The Architect of Faith

Msgr. Walterโ€™s vision reached into every corner of the parish:

In Brgy. Sabang Tabok, Sittio Bunga: He initiated the construction of the chapel dedicated to St. Isidore the Farmer.

In Brgy. Libas: He proposed the sanctuary dedicated to the first Filipino saint, San Lorenzo Ruiz.

Luminous Park: Established through the generosity of Lavezaresnon donors, featuring life-size images of the Five Luminous Mysteries and the Candle Chapel housing the replica of Nuestra Seรฑora de Salvacion.

Lavezares Catholic Memorial Cemetery: He oversaw its beautification, a project thoughtfully designed by Mr. Allan Sibayan.

A Final Act of Love

Even as his term drew to a close, Monsi Walterโ€™s zeal did not waver. On September 28, 2010, just weeks before his term ended in October, he initiated the celebration of the Feast of San Lorenzo Ruiz de Manila. By honoring the first Filipino saint and the patron of Filipino catechists, he left the parishโ€™s educators with a powerful spiritual legacy to carry forward.

A Personal Tribute

To Rev. Msgr. Walter De Asis Cerbito: Thank you for allowing us to walk beside you during those formative years. Your dedication to the history and the people of Lavezares, and your enduring connection to your roots in Catubig and San Vicente, has left a "Pitad" (footprint) that time will never erase. You taught us that true leadership is found in the dialogue of the barangays and the shared warmth of a humble meal.

Fray Eustaquio Paniagua Soto, OFM, Co-Administratort of Lavezares during the transition of being a visita of allen to a parish between 1894 to 1895.

He was born in Toro, Diocese of Zamora, Spain, on September 20, 1850. He entered the Order of St. Francis and professed his simple vows on May 12, 1868. In 1872, he joined the mission to the Philippines and was appointed parish priest of La Granja, Samar now Allen.

In 1896, Fray Paniagua advised his co-parish priests, Fray Severino Pรกramo, OFM, to construct a road connecting La Granja, Lavezares, and Bobรณn, funded by the residents of the three towns. He also served the nearby parish of Lavezares, a former visita of La Granja, and requested the construction of two primary schools for local boys and girls.

In 1889, he was appointed parish priest of Pambujan, serving until 1891, and in 1897, he became the pastor of Oras, where he was the last Franciscan parish priest before the end of Spanish colonial rule in 1898.

After leaving the Philippines, he returned to Spain, residing in Franciscan convents in Pastrana, Consuegra, and รvila, before being named chaplain of the nuns at Santa Juana de Cubas, where he continued his ministry until his death on January 27, 1931.

A Brief History of the Carozzas of the Passion during Good Friday at Our Lady of the Assumption Parish, Lavezares.

Historically, the Good Friday procession in Lavezares featured only three venerated holy images: the Nuestro Padre Jesus Nazareno (Chan Family), the Mater Dolorosa (Urbano Family), and the Santo Entierro (Flores/Rubenecia Family).

The Expansion of Devotion (2013โ€“Present)

In 2013, Rev. Fr. Ruel Deterala, who was the assistant parish priest at the time, initiated the addition of more karosas depicting the Saints and the Passion of Christ as a form of visual catechism for the parishioners. Through a collaborative effort, Mr. Annjill Dineros identified families willing to serve as Camareros (custodians) for these sacred images.

Chronological Addition of the Holy Images:

2013:

San Pedro Apostol (Mrs. Clarita O. Adriatico)

Santa Veronica (Mrs. Marilou Arellano and Ms. Cynthia Adriatico)

2014:

The Agony in the Garden (Mr. & Mrs. Rovir Ramirez, Sr.)

La Pieta (Mr. & Mrs. Wilejado Rotamula)

The Triumphal Entry of Jesus into Jerusalem (Mrs. Rebecca Cuyco)

2017:

Faith and Tradition in the 21st Century:
As the Church adapts to the modern world, the Commission for the Cultural Heritage of the Church has established a sub-commission focused on Church Tourism. This initiative promotes local culture and tradition, including the deep-seated devotion to Holy Week images, ensuring that these expressions of popular piety continue to flourish for future generations.

Headline: Faith, History, and Heritage in Lavezares

A beautiful day of reflection and community! Our local leaders and educators recently visited the Nuestra Seรฑora de Salvacion Historical and Ecclesiastical Museum for a special viewing of the art exhibit dedicated to Blessed Angel Ranera, OFM.

It was a gathering of minds and hearts as Mr. Randy Canales (Municipal Library), Mr. Rodel Cuyco (SB Secretary), and Ms. Diane Ayes (LCES) were toured by Museum Curator Mr. Ann Jill Dineros.

Beyond their roles in our municipality, these individuals share a deep calling as Catechists. This visit wasn't just about art; it was about honoring our spiritual roots and finding new ways to share the story of faith with the next generation.

โœจ Preserving our past to inspire our future.

Franciscan Priest and Martyr
Intercede in our Prayers!

Fr. Angel Hernรกndez Ranera de Diego, O.F.M., was a dedicated Franciscan missionary priest and martyr, whose life of service spanned from the historic towns of Spain to the remote parishes of the Philippines. Born in Pastrana on October 1, 1877, he entered the religious life by taking the habit in his hometown convent on October 20, 1892. Following his formation, he was destined for the Philippine missions after 1905, eventually arriving in the province of Samar to begin a prolific period of parochial ministry.

โ€‹His missionary journey in Samar began in 1908, where he was first assigned as the parish priest of Balangiga until 1910. He later moved to Lavezares, Northern Samar, serving as the parish priest from 1915 to 1917 with a reputation for deep dedication and faithful ministry to his parishioners. His leadership continued through several key assignments: he served as the parish priest of Allen from 1917 to 1920, and then as the parish priest of Catubig from 1920 to 1926. His final and most notable assignment in the region was as the parish priest of Laoang from 1926 to 1929, where he was remembered for working with "great zeal and supreme charity".

โ€‹Upon returning to Spain, Fr. Angel continued his vocation in various convents before being appointed as the Vicar of the community in Consuegra. It was there that he was caught in the turmoil of the Marxist revolution. Sharing the tragic fate of many of his fellow religious, he suffered the consequences of the era's intense persecution and was vilely assassinated on the outskirts of the town. Today, his remains are preserved in a dedicated chapel in the convent, serving as a testament to a man who crowned a virtuous and exemplary life with the ultimate sacrifice of martyrdom.

Lavezares Unveils "Ani ng Sining: Katotohanan at Giting" Art Exhibit at Local Museum

LAVEZARES, NORTHERN SAMAR โ€” In a resounding celebration of National Arts Month, the Nuestra Seรฑora de Salvacion Historical and Ecclesiastical Museum officially launched its highly anticipated art exhibition, โ€œAni ng Sining: Katotohanan at Giting,โ€ on Thursday, February 12, 2026.

Despite a brief delay due to inclement weather earlier in the week, the event successfully brought together government leaders, cultural advocates, and the academic community to honor the townโ€™s rich heritage.

Honoring a Local Legacy

The exhibit serves as a tribute to Blessed Angel Ranera de Diego, who served as the Administrator of Lavezares Parish from 1915 to 1917. Through the creative lenses of the Local Artists of Lavezares, the collection explores the themes of "Truth and Valor," reconnecting the modern community with the life of a man whose service is a cornerstone of the townโ€™s ecclesiastical history.

Synergy of Local and Provincial Leadership

The ceremony was highlighted by the presence of Municipal Mayor Hon. Edito Saludaga, whose administration has consistently supported the promotion of local culture. Joining him was Madam Brenda Morales, representing the Provincial Tourism Office, signaling strong provincial support for Lavezaresnon artistry.

A key partner in the endeavor was the Lavezares Municipal Tourism Office, which worked in close coordination with the museum and the Pinonayan Arts and Culture Organization to ensure the exhibit's success.

Historical Insights from Sir Carl Jaime Simple S. Bordeos

Adding profound depth to the visual display was the Guest Resource Speaker, Sir Carl Jaime Simple S. Bordeos. A respected voice in local history, Sir Bordeos provided a stirring historical lecture on the life, service, and martyrdom of Blessed Angel Ranera de Diego. His research provided the "Katotohanan" (Truth) that grounded the artistic "Ani" (Harvest), allowing attendees to appreciate the paintings not just as art, but as windows into the town's sacred past.

The Role of the Academe and Youth

The launch was also a showcase of youth involvement and academic collaboration. The faculty and students of Basilio B. Chan Memorial Agricultural and Industrial School (BBCMAIS) played a vital role in the dayโ€™s activities:

The Performing Arts Guild and Padasig Society, under the guidance of Maโ€™am Christelle Ogalesco, provided cultural performances that set a vibrant tone for the afternoon.

The student journalists of The Reaper, led by Sir Ruben Gallano and Maโ€™am Maidy Cupido Camposano, provided full documentation and media coverage.

The Senior High School Tourism Strand, supervised by Maโ€™am Mary Jane Enteria Oliverio, handled the logistics, guest reception, and hospitality.

A Lasting Cultural Landmark

The ribbon-cutting ceremony officially opened the gallery to the public, marking a successful harvest of local talent. โ€œAni ng Sining: Katotohanan at Gitingโ€ stands as a landmark event for Lavezares, proving that even in the face of challenges, the community's commitment to its history and the arts remains unyielding.

The exhibit remains on display at the Nuestra Seรฑora de Salvacion Historical and Ecclesiastical Museum, inviting residents and tourists alike to rediscover the valorous history of Lavezares.
