GENESIS CREATION SERIES | PART 1: OUT OF CHAOS, LIGHT
Have you ever asked yourself:
* Why am I here?
* Is my life just a cosmic accident?
* Who ultimately has the authority to define truth and purpose?
The opening verses of Genesis answer those questions before they answer anything else.
Before God gives Israel a single commandment, before the Law is given at Sinai, and before Scripture addresses human behavior, God establishes something foundational:
He is the Creator, and therefore He has the right to rule His creation.
Genesis 1 is not merely the story of how the world began. It is a declaration of who God is and who we are in relation to Him.
Today we're looking at Genesis 1:1–5, the account of the First Day of Creation.
# # 1️⃣ God Is the Sovereign Creator of Everything
“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” (Genesis 1:1)
The Bible doesn't begin by arguing for God's existence. It simply assumes it.
Before there was time, space, matter, energy, stars, galaxies, or human beings—there was God.
Moses uses the phrase “the heavens and the earth” to describe the totality of creation. Everything that exists owes its existence to Him.
This single verse challenges every worldview that places something above God:
• Matter is not eternal—God is.
• Creation is not the result of random chance—God designed it.
• There is not a pantheon of competing gods—there is one sovereign Creator.
The universe is not self-existent.
God alone is.

# # 2️⃣ God Brings Order Out of Chaos
“The earth was without form and void...” (Genesis 1:2)
The Hebrew phrase is tohu wa-bohu—formless and empty.
The earth was not evil, cursed, or abandoned. It was simply unfinished.
Like a blank canvas before the artist begins to paint, creation was waiting for the hand of its Creator.
Notice the pattern of Genesis 1:
Days 1–3: Forming
God solves the problem of formlessness by creating order, structure, and boundaries.
Days 4–6: Filling
God solves the problem of emptiness by filling those spaces with life.
And over this unfinished world hovers the Spirit of God.
The Hebrew word suggests the image of a bird hovering protectively over its nest, preparing it for life.
What a powerful reminder:
God specializes in bringing order out of chaos.
The same God who brought order to a formless world can bring order to a confused heart, a broken situation, or an uncertain future.

# # 3️⃣ God's Word Changes Reality
“And God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light.” (Genesis 1:3)
God does not struggle.
He does not fight.
He does not negotiate with darkness.
He simply speaks.
And reality obeys.
The first thing creation ever heard was the voice of God.
Before there was light, land, oceans, stars, animals, or humanity— there was the Word.
And notice something fascinating:
The sun, moon, and stars are not created until Day 4.
The first light of creation comes from God Himself.

The Gospel Connection
When John begins his Gospel, he intentionally echoes Genesis:
“In the beginning was the Word...” (John 1:1)
The New Testament reveals that Jesus Christ is the eternal Word through whom all things were made.
Paul connects creation and salvation in a beautiful way:
> “For God, who said, ‘Let light shine out of darkness,’ has shone in our hearts...” (2 Corinthians 4:6)
The God who spoke physical light into a dark world is the same God who speaks spiritual light into dark hearts.
Creation began with God saying:
“Let there be light.”
Salvation begins the same way.
God speaks.
Darkness flees.
Life begins.

A Thought for This Week
You are not an accident.
You are not the product of random chance.
The God who spoke galaxies into existence is the same God who knows your name.
The God who brought order to the chaos of creation is still bringing order to lives today.
And the God who said, “Let there be light,” is still shining His light into hearts through Jesus Christ.
