It was formerly called sitio “ Baka-Burnotan” of Bario Naguirangan of the municipality of San Juan, La Union. The sitio “Bak-Burnotan” is derived from a game of the old folks, which means “binnurnotan” or tug of war. The Baka-Burnotan is the place where the people in the nearby sitio gather around daily to pasture their carabaos and to play “binnurnotan” among the pastures. The game was mostly bet
ween the Christians and native settlers in the area who belong to the cultural minorities under the kankana-ey tribes. After the harvest or at the end of any work in the sitio, the natives as well as Christians gathered in one place for their favorite game of “binnurnotan” or tug of war. Having been used to hard work in the mountains, the natives always emerged as champions. During the later years, the name sitio “Bak-Barnotan” was shortened to Burnotan. Before the Spanish Colonial Period, the original settlers of the place were the descendants of the Indonesians who came down from Mountain province, comprising of the Ibaloy and the Kankana-ey tribes and Bago-igorot tribes. Sitio Burnutan became an ideal place for residence because of its location, which is a wide plain along the river with fertile soil and spacious grazing areas. The Roman Catholic Church through the late Fr. Redondo had for seen the need of evangelization. At about the closing of the Spanish colonial period, sometime during the 1890’s a Spanish priest Fr. Redondo is said to have made an ocular visit to the eastern portion of the town San Juan. He constructed a small cogon church where he preached the message of God every Sunday. He got acquainted with the residents and introduced some projects. One of the projects which preserved his good efforts and his name is the Redondo Street located at the western portion of the Poblacion. The friendliness and Hospitality of the natives contributed of the efforts of Fr. On April 20, 1896, Fr. Redondo was said to have bought in the church an image of St. Gabriel the Archangel. During his masses, he introduced St. Gabriel the Archangel to be the Patron Saint of the place. In honor of the patron saint, the town elders adopted San Gabriel as the name of the place. It is on this day of the year that the town fiesta is held. In April 19, 1897, San Gabriel has adopted and the name of the sitio.
