Mundane Things by: Sr. Jennifer, OP Reflections by: Sr. Jennifer Cuerdo, OP

You'll be surprised to realize that ordinary things, usually left unnoticed, would give you life's great lessons. πŸ₯°πŸ˜β€

This is a collection of my reflections on the simple things in life, which we usually don't give much thought of. These reflections are centered on my relationships with God, my community, friends and my family. I hope that this page could inspire the readers to focus more on the simple things, because it is in those simple things that God manifests Himself...

A TEACHER'S REWARD

When I first met this young man, he was in my Grade 9 Junior High School class. He actively participated in class discussions and would always get to play the major role (Jesus) in our "live" Living Rosary. His acting was already convincing back then.

This is the first time that we've met again after his High School graduation, during the "Transitus" celebration, and he's already a Franciscan friar!

He asked if I would still stay to watch the "Poverello" stage play so I already had a hint that he was again performing. His acting was superb... very pitiful as a l***r and very scary as the demon.

But what really impressed me and made me proud is that he is now a young professed religious - he really pursued to be a worker in the Lord's vineyard. It's really rewarding for a teacher to see your students advance in the path they have chosen; more so for a religious like me, to see my students follow the footsteps of Jesus, the path I myself am taking.

It's a pat on my back, as if saying, "you have done something good!" Thank You, Lord! πŸ™πŸ™πŸ™

QUOTABLE QUOTES

I have been used to seeing quotes or words that I said being posted in social media by my friends and former students. It gives me a "pat on the back" knowing that somehow, I have imparted something worth remembering for them.

But when I was quoted by an institution I am indebted with my licentiate studies in (I had a scholarship for three years in Angelicum), the feeling was indescribable!

This only proves that whatever we say leaves an impact, be it positive or negative, in the existence of others. And that we should be consistent, saying one thing and doing it as well. Because we may not notice it, other people keep a record of the words we utter.

YOUR LOVE LANGUAGE

I often hear people ask lovers what is their love language - the way they express or show their love to their partners.

Some would say they give gifts; others, they cook for them; still others, they make time for them. In whatever love language they have, they make sure that their love is felt and concretized.

But Jesus' love language is more than giving gifts, cooking, making time, etc. for us. He continues to prove His love for us to the extent that His Heart is already bleeding and hurting. His love language is giving His very life on the cross for us. There is no love language greater than that!

Happy Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus everyone!

STRESS AND OUR CELLS

A friend gave me this stress ball, and it is indeed very helpful.

Seeing the ball being stretched, bubbling and extending out of the net when pressed made me think. This is likely what happens to the cells inside our body when we let outside negative forces to "press" them hard. It could be the start of various illnesses... and worse, death.

So as much as possible, we should avoid stressors in our lives. It may be satisfying to look at a stress ball being crushed, but the pressures on the cells in our bodies is a different story. πŸ™πŸ™πŸ™

BUILDING TENTS

Being able to go up the Parang Hills in Dilasag, Aurora gave me a feel of what St. Peter exclaimed when Jesus transfigured before them on Mt. Tabor, "...it is good for us to be here. If you want, I can make three tents..." (Matthew 17:4)

It is very seldom that we go out of town as a community and experience the beauty of God's creation such as this. Most of us can't help but enjoy the scenery on top of the hill... visible mountain range, rich red soil with luscious grass, calm and deep azure ocean, clear blue sky with moving white clouds, bright rays of the morning sun and warm breeze gently touching the skin. The sight is awesome, especially for those who grew-up in the city!

But, just like Jesus and the apostles, we need to go down. We cannot build tents and reside there. We have to continue our mission to prepare ourselves and others for our final destination. The Lord gave us a chance to enjoy this earthly radiance, so that we will long for and be more excited for His heavenly splendor! πŸ‘πŸ™ŒπŸ™

INNER CHILD

Each of us has an inner child, waiting to be healed or satisfied.

We have indeed grown and aged, but our inner child remains - our happiness on simple things, our awe for nature, our excitement to try something new and our gratitude over little presents. These are traits we should never outgrow no matter how old we get, because these bring about joy.

So, what are you waiting for? Give your inner child a treat today! As for us, we reconnected with our childhood buddies - Thomas and Friends! β˜ΊοΈπŸ€—πŸ€

HUMAN DRONE

Filipinos are really creative when it comes to earning a living. When you are on the streets, you would see "wipers", those who clean windshields and side mirrors in exchange of coins. When you are commuting, there would be "barkers" who would call on passengers to ride the jeepney or tricycle.

There are also human drones ... for tourists who want to have souvenir photos and videos, they would gladly assist you. It takes talent and effort to make their clients satisfied, so their "work" is truly admirable.

Their income depends on the number of clients they had and on the generosity of the people who availed of their services. Simple as it may be, their job is decent... and truly respectable!

RELAXING UNDER THE MOON

We were all wet from swimming in the sea that afternoon and did not bring clothes for changing, so we decided to ride a pick-up car back to the house where we stayed.

It was cold because of the wind brushing through our drenched rash guards, but we could not help but notice the radiantly shining moon.

I always find the moon calming and reassuring, maybe because of its gentle and reflective light in the darkness. Whenever I see the moon, whether walking outside or riding on a vehicle, there is a certain sense of peace that comes with it.

I always hope and pray that every person on the earth get to appreciate the serenity that the moon gives... especially in those places where the moon is accompanied by sounds of sirens to warn them of potential missile or bomb attacks. Please protect them, Lord! Amen. πŸ™πŸ™πŸ™

BELIEFS ASSOCIATED WITH THE BALETE TREE

We went to one of the most visited spots in Aurora, Baler, often described as mystical and enchanting... the Balete Tree.

This Balete Tree is more than 600 years old with approximately 60–65 meters tall, with a trunk diameter of 10–15 meters. The roots and hollow trunk are large enough to fit about 10–15 people inside.

One of the highlights of this tourist attraction is to go inside or in between its roots and hollow trunk. Thus, after taking photos outside, the tourist guide led the way in entering the Balete Tree.

One of our sisters, the non-Filipina, did not join us in going inside. When we were about to leave the place, she told me her reason. Apparently, in their country which is predominantly Buddhist, monks live inside such trees. Thus, these kinds of trees are often regarded as sacred, with spirits or deities believed to reside in them.

Sometimes we tend to misunderstand other races whenever they visit us or when we visit their countries, that is why we need to know more about their culture before we make any conclusions.

MOTHERS AS UNTIERS OF KNOTS

One of my favorite images of the Blessed Mother is the Untier of Knots whose devotion was popularized by Pope Francis. It focuses on Mary’s intercession to untangle complex life strugglesβ€”"knots"β€” represent problems that cause despair, such as broken relationships, financial issues, unemployment, or sickness.

The devotion is inspired by a 1700 painting in Augsburg, Germany, showing Mary untying knots in a ribbon while surrounded by angels. It is rooted in St. Irenaeus's 2nd-century writing that Mary's obedience untied the knot of Eve's disobedience.

Come to think of it, in the context of family, untying knots is what mothers do best. Mothers and those who take the role of mothers untie knots - pick-up scattered things and arrange them in place; keep the house tidy in and out; coordinate events and surprises for the husband and children; act as mediator between family members' misunderstanding; find ways and means to fix everything!

Thank you Lord for the Blessed Mother and for our very own mothers - our families' untier of knots.

πŸ’žπŸ’₯πŸ«‚ HAPPY MOTHERS' DAY! πŸ₯°πŸ˜˜β€οΈ
