Stay out of cold. Enflame your heart with the warmness of God's love.

Tough times in the storms of your life don't diminish the reality of God's presence. Trials and challenges may come but your faith need not be shaken. Amidst these fears you're facing now, be still rest assured that God is with you and makes a way for you even if you found it too difficult to achieve. God is bigger than any tribulation that would come to disrupt your confidence and trust in him. He grants you the WISDOM to ascertain the truth of your faith with a clear UNDERSTANDING of its certitude and a fearless stand to defend it through his good COUNSEL. He fills you with COURAGE and the KNOWLEDGE to know of his abiding presence in all your trials and anxieties. He gives you the willingness to worship and serve him with reverence through the spirit of PIETY. The authenticity of your love for him can only arise from the grace of FEAR to clothe you with wonder and awe in your utmost respect to him.

Seek not the love for power, but the power to love. (al)

Is Pentecost really the “birthday of the Church”?

Pentecost is often called the “birthday of the Church,” but in the strict sense, the Church was born from the Paschal Mystery of Christ, especially from His total self-giving on the Cross.

The Catechism teaches that “the Church is born primarily of Christ’s total self-giving for our salvation” and that this was fulfilled on the Cross. This is symbolized by the blood and water flowing from the pierced side of Jesus.

At Pentecost, the Holy Spirit was poured out upon the apostles. The Catechism teaches that on that day, the Church was “openly displayed to the crowds” and was “made manifest to the world” by the outpouring of the Holy Spirit.

Pentecost, therefore, is the public manifestation of the Church: the moment when the Holy Spirit empowered the apostles to proclaim the Gospel with courage and begin the mission entrusted by Christ.

The Church was born from the Paschal Mystery of Christ; at Pentecost, she was revealed and sent forth by the Holy Spirit.

Come, Holy Spirit, renew the Church and strengthen us for mission.

Have you ever noticed that on Pentecost Sunday, Catholic priests suddenly wear bright red vestments instead of the usual green, white, or purple? Many Catholics immediately recognize the color change, but not everyone knows the deep spiritual
meaning behind it.

The red vestments on Pentecost are closely connected to the coming of the Holy Spirit.

First, Pentecost celebrates the moment the Holy Spirit descended upon the apostles after the Resurrection and Ascension of Jesus Christ.

The Bible says: “Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire” (Acts 2:3).

Because the Holy Spirit appeared in the form of fiery tongues resting upon the apostles, the Church uses red to symbolize that spiritual fire.

Second, red represents the presence, power, and action of the Holy Spirit. Spiritually speaking, Pentecost marks the birth of the Church’s public mission, when the apostles received courage and strength to preach the Gospel openly.

Before Pentecost, the apostles were fearful and hiding. After receiving the Holy Spirit, they began proclaiming Christ boldly to the world.

Third, red is also associated in Catholic liturgy with zeal, sacrifice, and martyrdom. Many of the apostles who received the Holy Spirit at Pentecost later gave their lives for the Christian faith.

Because of this, red reminds Catholics not only of fire, but also of the courage and witness that comes through the Holy Spirit.

Fourth, Pentecost is one of the most important feast days in the Church because it celebrates the fulfillment of Christ’s promise to send the Holy Spirit.

The Bible says: “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you” (Acts 1:8).

The red vestments visually express that divine power and spiritual energy.

Fifth, throughout Catholic liturgical tradition, different colors carry symbolic meanings:
White symbolizes joy, purity, and Resurrection.
Purple symbolizes penance and preparation.
Green symbolizes hope and ordinary time.
Red symbolizes the Holy Spirit, fire, love, sacrifice, and martyrdom.

Pentecost uniquely combines many of these meanings.

Sixth, the use of red during Pentecost also helps teach the faith visually. Even without words, the color itself reminds the faithful about the descent of the Holy Spirit and the mission of the Church.

Catholic liturgy often teaches not only through preaching, but also through symbols, colors, gestures, incense, music, and sacred art.

Seventh, spiritually speaking, Pentecost reminds Catholics that the Holy Spirit is still active today, guiding, strengthening, and sanctifying the Church.

The same Spirit that descended upon the apostles is believed to continue working in believers through:
prayer,
the sacraments,
the gifts of the Holy Spirit,
and the life of the Church.

The Bible says: “Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love” (Roman liturgical prayer based on Acts imagery).

In simple words, priests wear red vestments on Pentecost Sunday because red symbolizes the fire of the Holy Spirit that descended upon the apostles. The color represents spiritual power, courage, zeal, and the birth of the Church’s mission to proclaim the Gospel to the world.

Now you know.

Katekesis:

Dayon sang adlaw sang Pentekostes, may makatilingala gid nga natabo. Nag-abot ang Espiritu Santo pareho sang mabaskog nga hangin, kag may nagpakita nga daw mga dila sang kalayo nga nagtupa sa tagsa nila. Napuno sila sang gahum kag kaisog.

Ano ang aton matun-an sini?
