If Quiapo has its Black Nazarene, Gapan has its own version of the image.

Originally owned by the family of Maxima Navarro, wife of 1896 "'First Cry of Nueva Ecija" hero, General Pantaleon Valmonte, the life-sized Gapan Nazarene is said to have arrived in the country aboard a Spanish galleon from Mexico like the Quiapo image, but is of lighter complexion. It is so finely crafted that the tongue and teeth could be seen in the half-open mouth and life-like veins protrude from the hands. Atop the head are three rays and a crown of thorns and around the neck is a chain, all made of silver.

A second smaller image stands behind the Nazarene -- that of Simon the Cyrene who was forced by the Romans to help Jesus carry the cross.

The Nazarene has been the centerpiece of the Holy Week processions in Gapan since the Spanish era.

When the last of the Navarros -- Maxima and her childless sister, Teodora -- died, the image was placed under the care of Maxima's youngest son, Joaquin Valmonte. Eventually, the image was passed on to Josefina Valmonte-Reyes, Joaquin's daughter.
