Title: A Mother that Honors God!
Speaker: Rev. Efraim F. Tardo
Verses: Exodus 2:1-10
Blessed day, children of God!
Today, we are joyfully celebrating Mother’s Day, a time to honor the incredible women who have nurtured, loved, and led us. As we reflect on the gift of mothers, let us also look into the life of a remarkable woman in the Bible—a mother who honored God in the midst of fear and uncertainty: Jochebed, the mother of Moses, Aaron, and Miriam.
Jochebed may not be as well-known as some other biblical figures, but her faith and courage had a lasting impact not just on her children—but on the entire story of Israel. Let us draw out three powerful principles from her life that teach us how we can honor God as mothers, parents, and believers.
1. We Can Honor God by Personally Trusting Him (Exodus 2:1-2, Hebrews 11:23)
During the time of Jochebed, Pharaoh had issued a brutal command: every Hebrew baby boy was to be killed to stop the Israelite population from growing. Yet, amid this terrifying decree, Jochebed gave birth to a son—Moses—and she saw that he was no ordinary child.
Rather than give in to fear, she chose to trust God. The Bible tells us in Hebrews 11:23 that “by faith Moses’ parents hid him for three months, because they saw he was no ordinary child, and they were not afraid of the king’s edict.”
Jochebed teaches us that honoring God begins with personal faith. Even when the world gives us every reason to fear, we honor God when we put our trust in Him. As parents, we honor God when we raise our children in faith, disciplining, guiding, and teaching them to walk in His truth.
2. We Can Honor God by Entrusting Our Children to Him (Exodus 2:3-9)
When Jochebed could no longer hide Moses, she did something both desperate and faithful—she placed him in a basket and set him afloat on the Nile River, entrusting her child into God’s care.
God honored her trust. Pharaoh’s daughter found the baby, had compassion on him, and unknowingly appointed Jochebed herself to nurse and care for her own son!
This reminds us of a powerful truth: when we entrust our children to God, He is faithful to care for them. We may not always be able to protect our children from every danger, but we can place them in the hands of the One who sees all, knows all, and loves them even more than we do.
Jochebed's story tells us that entrusting our children to God is not an act of fear, but of faith.
3. We Can Honor God by Raising Our Children in Him (Exodus 2:9-10)
While Moses was under Jochebed’s care, even for a limited time, she made the most of that opportunity. Though the Bible doesn't detail her exact words or actions, we know from Moses’ later life that he grew up with a strong sense of identity as a Hebrew and knowledge of the God of Israel.
This shows us that Jochebed must have taught him about the one true God, planting seeds of faith that would one day lead Moses to reject the riches of Egypt and instead lead his people to freedom.
As parents, guardians, and mentors, we honor God by raising our children in His truth and love. It’s not just about giving them food and education—it’s about pointing them to Jesus, modeling faith, and speaking God’s Word into their hearts.
In Conclusion, Jochebed was a mother who honored God not through grand gestures, but through faithful obedience in difficult times. Her story challenges us to do the same:
• Trust God personally in every circumstance.
• Entrust your children to His perfect plan.
• Raise them to know and love Him.
May every mother today be reminded that your faithfulness matters deeply. Even when no one sees your sacrifices, God sees—and He honors your faith.
Happy Mother’s Day, and may we all strive to be people of faith like Jochebed, trusting and honoring God with all that we are.
