WHY DID JESUS SAY “EAT MY FLESH AND DRINK MY BLOOD”? THE TEACHING THAT SHOCKED THE WORLD
Few teachings of Jesus have disturbed people more than this one.
Imagine hearing it for the first time:
“Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in you.” (John 6:53)
To the Jewish audience listening, this sounded shocking, offensive, even unbearable.
Because in Jewish law, drinking blood was strictly forbidden.
So why would Jesus say something so radical?
Was He speaking symbolically? Was it only a metaphor? Or was He revealing something far deeper than many people realize?
The answer changes everything.
✝️ 1. THE CONTEXT BEGINS WITH A MIRACLE
Before Jesus gave this teaching, He performed the multiplication of loaves.
Thousands were fed miraculously in the wilderness.
This was not accidental.
It pointed back to Moses and the manna in the desert.
The Jews immediately recognized the connection.
In the Old Testament, God fed Israel with bread from Heaven.
Now Jesus was preparing to reveal: a new and greater Bread from Heaven.
✝️ 2. JESUS DID NOT SAY “MY TEACHINGS ARE BREAD”
Notice carefully what Jesus says.
He does not merely say: “My words are life.”
He says:
“I am the Bread of Life.”
And then He becomes even more direct:
“The bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.” (John 6:51)
At this point, the crowd becomes disturbed.
They ask:
“How can this man give us his flesh to eat?”
Now here is the shocking part:
Jesus does not soften the statement.
He intensifies it.
✝️ 3. JESUS REPEATS THE TEACHING EVEN MORE STRONGLY
If Jesus meant only: “Believe in me symbolically,”
this was the perfect moment to clarify.
Instead, He says again:
“My flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink.” (John 6:55)
The Greek language becomes even stronger here.
Jesus shifts to a verb meaning: to chew, to gnaw, to truly eat.
This is why many disciples reacted with horror.
✝️ 4. MANY DISCIPLES LEFT JESUS OVER THIS TEACHING
This moment is extraordinary.
The Gospel says:
“Many of His disciples drew back and no longer walked with Him.” (John 6:66)
Notice: they did not leave because they misunderstood.
They left because they understood too well.
And again, Jesus does not call them back saying: “Wait, I only meant it symbolically!”
Instead, He turns to the Apostles and asks:
“Will you also go away?”
This is one of the strongest evidences that Jesus meant what He said.
✝️ 5. THE LAST SUPPER REVEALS THE FULL MEANING
Everything in John 6 points toward the Last Supper.
There, Jesus takes bread and says:
“This IS my body.”
Not: “This represents my body.”
Then He takes the cup:
“This IS my blood.”
This is the foundation of the Eucharist.
The same Jesus who spoke in John 6 now fulfills those words sacramentally.
✝️ 6. THE OLD TESTAMENT WAS PREPARING FOR THIS
The Eucharist did not appear suddenly.
The entire Old Testament was pointing toward it.
The manna in the desert. The Passover lamb. The sacrifices in the Temple. The bread of the Presence.
All were shadows preparing for Christ.
In the Passover, the lamb was not only sacrificed.
It had to be eaten.
Likewise, Christ becomes the true Passover Lamb, given for the life of the world.
✝️ 7. THIS IS WHY THE EARLY CHRISTIANS DEFENDED THE EUCHARIST SO STRONGLY
From the earliest centuries, Christians believed the Eucharist was truly the Body and Blood of Christ.
St. Ignatius of Antioch, a disciple of the Apostles themselves, called the Eucharist:
“The flesh of our Savior Jesus Christ.”
This was not a medieval invention.
It was ancient Christian belief from the beginning.
✝️ 8. WHY THIS TEACHING STILL SHOCKS PEOPLE TODAY
Because the Eucharist destroys shallow Christianity.
If the Eucharist is truly Christ, then Christianity is not merely: a philosophy a motivational message or symbolic religion
It becomes encounter.
Union.
Communion with the living Christ Himself.
That is why Catholics kneel before the Eucharist.
Not because bread is worshipped.
But because Christ is present.
✝️ 9. THE CROSS AND THE EUCHARIST ARE CONNECTED
At Calvary, Jesus gave His Body for the world.
In the Eucharist, He gives that same Body sacramentally to believers.
The Eucharist is not a repetition of the Cross.
It is participation in the one eternal sacrifice of Christ.
This is why the Mass is so sacred.
The altar is deeply connected to Calvary.
✝️ 10. THE DEEPEST HUNGER OF HUMANITY
Human beings hunger for many things: success pleasure recognition power
But beneath all these hungers lies a deeper one:
the hunger for God Himself.
And in the Eucharist, Christ gives not merely blessings…
but Himself.
✝️ FINAL MESSAGE
So why did Jesus say: “Eat my flesh and drink my blood”?
Because He was not offering humanity mere inspiration.
He was offering divine life.
The crowd was shocked because they realized this teaching was radical.
Many walked away.
But Jesus did not change His words.
Because the Eucharist would become the beating heart of the Church.
The Bread from Heaven. The true Passover. The Presence of Christ among His people.
And even today, the same question remains:
Will we walk away…
or will we stay with Peter and say:
“Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.”
God bless you.
