Cardinal José Advincula has called for a deeper response to school violence, saying that security measures alone are not enough to address the challenges faced by young people.

Following a recent school shooting, Cardinal Advincula urged society not to allow such incidents to simply “pass” without seriously examining the conditions affecting children and young people.

His call goes beyond questions of safety and security. He emphasized the need for families, schools, communities, and institutions to work together in supporting young people and creating environments where they can grow with hope, guidance, and a sense of belonging.

Cardinal Advincula also stressed the importance of listening to the concerns of young people and responding to the deeper struggles they may face. Preventing violence, he said, requires more than responding after tragedy happens. It also calls for building communities where young people are valued, supported, and cared for.

For the Church, this is also a call to strengthen its presence among the young and to accompany them with compassion, faith, and hope.

Beyond security, Cardinal Advincula’s message is a call to action: to listen, to accompany, and to build communities where every young person can find hope and a future.

𝐒𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐃𝐚𝐲 | St. Monica, Mother of St. Augustine

Today, the Church honors St. Monica, a devoted Christian mother whose life became a powerful witness to faith, patient love, and persevering prayer. Born in North Africa around 331, Monica married Patricius, a pagan man, and became the mother of three children, including St. Augustine of Hippo. Her family life was marked by many difficulties, but she never stopped praying for the conversion of her husband and children.

St. Monica is especially remembered for the many years she spent praying for Augustine, who struggled for a long time to embrace the Christian faith. She followed him with a mother's concern and continued to place his life in God's hands. Her perseverance was eventually rewarded when Augustine converted to Christianity, was baptized by St. Ambrose of Milan, and later became a priest, bishop, and one of the greatest teachers of the Church.

In many sacred images, St. Monica is depicted wearing a veil or widow's clothing, holding a crucifix, a rosary, or a book, and sometimes accompanied by her son Augustine. The crucifix and rosary represent her life of persistent prayer and her trust in God's mercy. The book may symbolize the spiritual wisdom that guided her life, while images of Monica with Augustine recall the profound bond between a mother who never gave up praying and the son whose life was eventually transformed by God's grace.

The life of St. Monica reminds us that prayer may sometimes require patience, especially when we are praying for the people we love. Her story teaches us not to lose hope when answers do not come immediately. God works in ways and in time that we may not always understand.

Today, we especially entrust to St. Monica all mothers, parents, families, and those who faithfully pray for the conversion and well-being of their loved ones. May her example teach us to pray with patience, love without giving up, and place everything into the hands of God.

VATICAN CITY — Pope Leo XIV emphasized that active participation in the liturgy helps the faithful enter into a deeper relationship with God.

During his General Audience on August 26 at St. Peter’s Basilica, the Holy Father continued his reflections on the Second Vatican Council’s Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, Sacrosanctum Concilium. This marked his final catechesis dedicated to the document.

Pope Leo explained that the liturgy is not something in which the faithful simply watch or remain silent. Through the prayers, gestures, words, and actions of the celebration, the faithful are invited to participate consciously and fully in the mystery of Christ.

The Pope also recalled that the liturgical reform of the Second Vatican Council was rooted in the Church’s living tradition. The reform sought to make the liturgy more accessible while remaining faithful to the Church’s heritage.

He stressed that the liturgy is a celebration of the whole Church and not a private activity. Because of this, bishops and priests have the responsibility to safeguard the dignity of the liturgy, ensuring that it follows the Church’s norms and expresses the unity of the faithful.

Pope Leo also described the liturgy as a powerful instrument of evangelization and a means through which the faithful receive God’s grace, grow in unity, and learn to offer their lives to God.

The Holy Father reminded the faithful that liturgical reform is meant to help everyone understand and participate more deeply in the sacred mysteries.
The liturgy, Pope Leo XIV reminded the Church, is an encounter with God that calls every believer not to be a silent spectator, but an active participant in faith and worship.

The Archdiocese joins the family, relatives, and loved ones of Manuel “Tatay Manny” Polaron, father of Rev. Fr. Allen Polaron, DCC, in prayer and mourning as the Funeral Mass for Tatay Manny was celebrated this morning at San Carlos Borromeo Parish in Isulan, Sultan Kudarat.

The Holy Mass was presided over by Rev. Fr. Benjamin Ariel Torreto, DCC, and concelebrated by priests of the Archdiocese, who gathered in prayer to commend Tatay Manny to the loving mercy of God and to accompany the Polaron family during this time of sorrow.

As we bid farewell to Tatay Manny, we offer our heartfelt sympathy and deepest condolences to Rev. Fr. Allen Polaron, DCC, and the entire Polaron family. In this moment of grief, may they find comfort in the prayers, presence, and support of the Church community, and may the promise of the Resurrection give them strength and hope.

May the Lord, who is rich in mercy and love, welcome Manuel “Tatay Manny” Polaron into His eternal embrace. May perpetual light shine upon him, and may he rest in peace.

More than 1,700 altar servers were reminded that serving at the altar is not simply about knowing the correct movements and following the rites during Mass.

Bishop Roberto Gaa emphasized that altar serving is a ministry that calls young people to grow in faith, responsibility, and love for God and the Church.

The bishop encouraged the altar servers to understand the deeper meaning of their service. Their presence at the altar is not only a task to perform but an opportunity to draw closer to Christ and become an example to others.

He also reminded them that what they learn while serving should extend beyond the church. Their faith should be reflected in the way they treat their families, friends, and communities.

The gathering served as a reminder that every act of service in the Church, no matter how simple, can become a way of growing closer to God.

For altar servers, serving at the altar is more than getting the rites right. It is about serving with faith, love, and a heart willing to follow Christ.

𝐒𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐃𝐚𝐲 | St. Joseph Calasanz, Priest and Founder of the Piarists

Today, the Church honors St. Joseph Calasanz, priest and founder of the Order of the Pious Schools, commonly known as the Piarists. Born in Spain in 1557, Joseph moved to Rome, where he was deeply touched by the difficult lives of poor children who had little or no access to education. Seeing education as a powerful way to break the cycle of poverty and lead young people toward a better future, he dedicated his life to teaching and forming children, especially those from poor families.

In 1597, St. Joseph opened what is recognized as the first free public school in Europe, offering education to children regardless of their social or economic status. He eventually founded the Piarists, whose mission continues to unite education, faith, and care for the young. Despite facing opposition and painful misunderstandings within his own community, Joseph remained faithful to his calling, trusting that God had entrusted him with the mission of educating and forming the young.

In many sacred images, St. Joseph Calasanz is depicted wearing the black habit of the Piarists, holding a book, a crucifix, or surrounded by children. The book represents his lifelong mission of education and his conviction that knowledge should be accessible to every child. The crucifix reflects the Christ-centered foundation of his educational mission, while the children represent those whom he served with particular love, especially the poor and neglected. His images remind us that for St. Joseph, teaching was not simply a profession but a vocation and a form of Christian service.

The life of St. Joseph Calasanz reminds us that education can be an act of mercy. By teaching a child, we help form not only the mind but also the heart and conscience. May his example inspire teachers, parents, catechists, and all who work with young people to educate with patience, compassion, and faith, helping every child discover the dignity and purpose God has given them.

𝐒𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐃𝐚𝐲 | St. Louis, King of France

Today, the Church honors St. Louis IX, King of France, a ruler remembered not simply for his royal authority, but for his deep faith, love for the poor, and commitment to justice. Born in 1214, Louis became king while still young. Despite the responsibilities of governing a kingdom, he sought to place his life and leadership under the guidance of Christ.

St. Louis was known for his personal prayer, love for the Church, and concern for those who were poor and suffering. He promoted justice in his kingdom, personally listened to people who sought his judgment, and supported hospitals, monasteries, and charitable works. He also undertook pilgrimages and crusades motivated by his devotion to the Holy Land. He died in 1270 while on the Eighth Crusade near Tunis and was later canonized by Pope Boniface VIII in 1297.

In many sacred images, St. Louis is depicted wearing royal robes and a crown, often holding a scepter, a sword, or the Crown of Thorns. The crown and royal garments recall his vocation as king, while the scepter represents his authority as a ruler. When he is shown with the Crown of Thorns, it recalls his deep devotion to Christ's Passion and the precious relics of the Passion that he brought to France, including the Crown of Thorns, for which he built the Sainte-Chapelle in Paris.

The life of St. Louis reminds us that positions of authority are opportunities for service. His example challenges leaders and all Christians to use their responsibilities not for personal glory, but for justice, compassion, and the good of others. May we learn from him that true greatness is found in serving God and His people with humility and integrity.

The San Blas Parish, Pigcawayan - Youth Ministry held an Orientation and Awareness Seminar on Violence Against Women and Children (VAWC) on August 22, 2026, gathering more than 200 young participants from the parish’s eight districts, KHOA, and school-based Catholic youth groups.

The seminar featured Sr. Judith Padasas, CCV, a member of Talitha-Kum Philippines, as resource person. The discussion focused on safeguarding the young, raising awareness and strengthening the responsibility of young people and the wider community to promote safe, respectful, and protective environments.

Safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility. Together, let us create a Church where the young are safe, heard, and empowered.

Saint Joseph Parish in Banisilan held its Parish Synodal Consultation on Saturday, August 22, 2026, gathering 265 participants from the different sectors and ministries of the parish.

The participants included representatives from the parish's major chapel officers, parish ministries, LOMDAS officers, district coordinators, Parish Pastoral Council (PPC), Parish Finance Council (PFC), and the entire Parish Formators Team.

Through prayer, reflection, and meaningful dialogue, the consultation provided an opportunity for the faithful to listen to one another, discern together, and share their hopes and insights for the life and mission of the parish. The gathering reflected the Church's continuing journey of communion, participation, and mission, as the parish seeks to walk together and respond faithfully to the needs of the local Church.

May the fruits of this consultation help Saint Joseph Parish grow as a more listening, participative, and missionary community of faith, journeying together in synodality.
