CHRISTMAS REMINDS US WHAT TRULY MATTERS | "As we prepare for Christmas tomorrow, let us remember something very beautiful: God did not save the world by building something impressive. He came as a child, small, humble, vulnerable.

That is God's way of telling us: What changes lives is not power, but love; not control, but trust; not pride, but humility.

My dear brothers and sisters, on this day before Christmas, God is not asking us to do more, to achieve more, or to prove more. He is simply asking us to come home to Him.

To reflect quietly and ask: What kind of legacy do I want to leave? What kind of life do I want my children to remember?

If what they remember is faith in God, honesty in our dealings, kindness in our words, and love in our homes, then we have lived well.

As you go home today, tired but grateful, may you carry this thought in your heart: You do not have to be perfect. You only need to be faithful."

- Cebu Archbishop Alberto "Abet" Uy in his homily during the 9th Day of the Misa de Gallo at the Archdiocesan Shrine of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus in D. Jakosalem St., Cebu City. (24 December 2025)

JESUS IS THE LIGHT WHO CAME INTO THE WORLD TO DISPEL SIN & DARKNESS

Candles play an important role, not only in the darkness but also in our faith. The symbolism of light has long been used in religious practice, as well as in the general use of candles. In the Catholic Church, light has always held special significance because it represents Christ. We know that Jesus called himself the Light of the World.

Additionally, St. John’s Gospel connects Christ with the imagery of light in John 1:4: “In him was life; and the life was the light of men.”

Just like Jesus, there are people in our lives who also act like candles—good and selfless individuals who are willing to sacrifice themselves to bring light to others.

This profound symbolism is beautifully reflected in the blessing of candles during the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord at the Temple. On this day, also known as Candlemas, the Church blesses candles, reminding us that Christ is the true light who came to illuminate the world. As we hold our candles in prayer, we are called to be bearers of His light, bringing hope, love, and faith to those around us

Following last month’s Jubilee of Educators, Students, and Children, we now dedicate this month to honoring and praying for vocations and the sick as we observe the Jubilee of Seminarians, Consecrated Life, Ordained Ministers, and the Sick.

As we pray for vocations, we offer our heartfelt gratitude and prayers for those who have embraced God’s call to serve and for the sick who face their trials with courage and faith. May they be strengthened by hope and continue to embody Christ’s enduring presence of service, compassion, and love in the Church and the world.
