Today, we celebrate the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord. This feast commemorates the moment when Mary and Joseph brought the infant Jesus to the Temple in Jerusalem, in accordance with the Law of Moses (Luke 2:22-40). This feast highlights two significant Jewish practices: the purification of the mother 40 days after childbirth (Leviticus 12:1-8) and the presentation of the firstborn male child to God (Exodus 13:2, 12-15), symbolizing his consecration and redemption. As a faithful Jewish family, Joseph and Mary offered two pigeons in the Temple, a sacrifice prescribed for those who could not afford a lamb.
Beyond its Jewish roots, the Church sees this event as a profound foreshadowing of Jesus’ ultimate mission. The presentation finds its fulfillment in the passion, death, and resurrection of the Lord, as Jesus is not only presented but offered completely for the salvation of humanity. This theological dimension emphasizes that Christ is the true Light who enters the Temple, illuminating the world and bringing redemption.
The feast is known by various names. Traditionally, it was called the Feast of the Purification of Mary, focusing on her ritual purification. In the Eastern Churches, it is referred to as Hypapante, meaning “Encounter,” symbolizing the meeting between the Old Testament, represented by Simeon and Anna, and the New Testament embodied in Christ. Simeon, led by the Holy Spirit, proclaims Jesus as the “light for revelation to the Gentiles” (Luke 2:32). Hence, this feast is also known as Candlemas, where candles are blessed in liturgical celebrations to signify Christ as the Light of the World.
This feast offers rich spiritual insights. It calls us to present our lives to God in faithful obedience and trust, just as Mary and Joseph did. It reminds us that encountering Christ transforms our lives, filling them with light and hope. Finally, it invites us to be like Simeon and Anna, who recognized the Lord in the Temple and joyfully proclaimed His presence to others.
