"DO NOT FOLLOW YOUR HEART — FOLLOW THE CONVICTION AND DIRECTION OF THE HOLY SPIRIT"
Meaning rooted in rightly dividing the Word for the Body of Christ.
1. FIRST: WHY THE BIBLE WARNS US NOT TO "FOLLOW YOUR HEART"
The world says "trust your heart", but God says exactly the opposite:
JEREMIAH 17:9
"The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked; who can know it?"
PROVERBS 3:5
"Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding."
PROVERBS 28:26
"He who trusts in his own heart is a fool, but whoever walks wisely will be delivered."
WHAT THIS MEANS:
- Your heart/emotions/feelings are not neutral — they are easily swayed by:
- Selfish desire, pride, or fear
- Past hurts or wrong expectations
- Peer pressure, culture, or what feels good right now
- Satan’s lies — he appeals to feelings first
- Feelings change like the weather — but God’s truth never changes.
- Following your heart often means following what you want, not what God wants.
2. WHAT IS THE HOLY SPIRIT’S "CONVICTION & DIRECTION"?
This is not just a "good feeling" or "warm tingle." It is solid, certain guidance from God’s Spirit, always aligned with His written Word.
A. IT IS BASED ON TRUTH, NOT FEELINGS
JOHN 16:13
"However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth..."
1 CORINTHIANS 2:12–13
"Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God. These things we also speak, not in words which man’s wisdom teaches but which the Holy Spirit teaches..."
✅ Conviction = The Spirit showing you what is TRUE, RIGHT, and GOD’S WILL — even if it feels hard or painful at first.
❌ Your heart = What you want to be true, what feels easy, or what pleases you.
B. IT IS PEACE THAT SURPASSES FEELINGS
PHILIPPIANS 4:6–7
"And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus."
COLOSSIANS 3:15
"And let the peace of God rule in your hearts..."
→ Spiritual peace is not "excitement" — it is deep calm, assurance, and alignment with God’s will, even when your heart is breaking or afraid.
C. IT NEVER CONTRADICTS SCRIPTURE
1 JOHN 4:1
"Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world."
ISAIAH 8:20
"To the law and to the testimony! If they do not speak according to this word, it is because there is no light in them."
→ The Holy Spirit will never lead you to do something the Bible clearly forbids. If your "feeling" contradicts Scripture — it is not the Spirit.
3. CLEAR DIFFERENCE: FOLLOWING YOUR HEART VS FOLLOWING THE SPIRIT
❌ FOLLOWING YOUR HEART / FEELINGS ✅ FOLLOWING HOLY SPIRIT’S CONVICTION
Based on: What I want, what feels good now Based on: What God says, what pleases Him
Changes easily: "I felt this yesterday, now I feel that" Steady & sure: Consistent with God’s Word
Self-centered: "Does this make me happy/comfortable?" Christ-centered: "Does this honor God and build others up?"
Leads to confusion & regret: "I thought this was right..." Leads to peace & purpose: Even if hard, you know you are in His will
Often avoids sacrifice: Runs from what hurts Willing to suffer for truth: Walks the narrow way
4. PAUL’S EXAMPLE — FOR US TODAY
2 CORINTHIANS 1:8–9
"For we do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, of our trouble which came to us in Asia: that we were burdened beyond measure, above strength, so that we despaired even of life. Yes, we had the sentence of death in ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves but in God who raises the dead."
ROMANS 8:14–17
"For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. For you did not receive the spirit of bo***ge again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, 'Abba, Father.' The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God."
GALATIANS 5:25
"If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit."
PAUL’S LESSON:
Even when his heart was terrified, sad, or confused — he did not follow those feelings. He followed what God had revealed, what aligned with the Gospel, and what the Spirit confirmed.
5. HOW DO YOU KNOW IT IS TRULY THE SPIRIT?
Check these three things — all must be true:
1. ✅ Does it agree fully with God’s written Word? (Romans–Philemon for us)
2. ✅ Does it bring deep peace, not just excitement or pressure?
3. ✅ Does it glorify Christ, not yourself or others?
BOTTOM LINE HERE: 💙
God gave you a heart — but He did not give it authority to lead you.
The Holy Spirit is your Guide, and the Bible is your map.
Your heart can lie to you — but the Spirit never lies.
Your heart will change — but the Spirit’s direction stands forever.
PROVERBS 20:27
"The spirit of a man is the lamp of the Lord, searching all the inner depths of his heart."
Let God’s Spirit search your heart — then follow Him, not your heart.
PRAYER 🙏
Heavenly Father, thank You for Your Holy Spirit who guides us into all truth. Forgive us for the times we have trusted our own feelings, desires, or fears instead of Your sure Word. Teach us to test every thought, every desire, every "leading" against Your Scripture. Give us discernment to know what is from You, what is from our own deceitful hearts, and what is from the enemy. Help us to walk by Your Spirit, not by sight or feeling — to choose Your will even when it costs us, and to rest in Your peace that never fails. In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.🙏
