THE SEASONS OF THE LITURGICAL YEAR

The liturgical year is the Church’s sacred journey through the life and mission of Jesus Christ. More than a calendar of celebrations, it is a spiritual path that allows the faithful to encounter Christ in every season of life. Through the changing rhythms of prayer, worship, and reflection, the Church invites us to grow deeper in faith and to walk closely with the Lord from His coming into the world to His glorious reign as King.

• Advent — Christ is Coming
A season of hopeful waiting and preparation as we anticipate the coming of the Savior.

• Christmas — Christ is Born
The joyful celebration of the Incarnation, where God became man out of love for humanity.

• Ordinary Time — Jesus Teaches
After celebrating Christ’s birth, the Church enters Ordinary Time, where we reflect on the public ministry of Jesus. During this season, we listen to His teachings, witness His miracles, and learn what it truly means to become His disciples. It is a time of spiritual growth, formation, and learning the values of the Kingdom of God.

• Lent — Jesus Calls for Conversion
A sacred season of repentance, prayer, fasting, and renewal as we prepare our hearts for Christ’s Passion.

• Paschal Triduum — Christ Suffers, Dies, and Rises
The holiest days of the Church, where we journey through the Last Supper, the Cross, and the Resurrection of Jesus.

• Easter — Christ is Risen and Ascended to Heaven
A season of victory and hope, celebrating Christ’s triumph over sin and death and His ascension into glory.

• Pentecost — The Holy Spirit Descends
The coming of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles, empowering the Church for mission and marking the end of the Easter season.

• Ordinary Time — Living the Faith
As Ordinary Time resumes after Pentecost, the Church shifts from learning about Christ’s teachings to actively living them out. Strengthened by the Holy Spirit, we are called to continue Christ’s mission through daily acts of faith, love, mercy, and service. This season reminds us that holiness is not found only in extraordinary moments, but also in the ordinary rhythms of everyday life. Here, discipleship becomes action, and faith becomes a way of life.

• Christ the King — Jesus Reigns Supreme
The liturgical year concludes by proclaiming Christ as King of the universe, reminding us that all creation ultimately belongs to Him.

As we journey through the liturgical year, we are continually drawn into the Paschal Mystery — the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Each season forms our hearts, strengthens our faith, and teaches us how to live as faithful followers of Christ. May this sacred journey inspire us to live the Gospel daily and lead us ever closer to the heart of God.

Happy Birthday, One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church!

Today we rejoice not simply in a tradition, but in a living mystery—the birth of the Church at Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit descended upon the apostles like a rushing wind and tongues of fire. From that moment, fear was transformed into courage, confusion into mission, and silence into proclamation. The Church was no longer locked behind closed doors; it was sent forth into the world.

To call this the “birthday of the Church” is to recognize that the Church is not merely an institution, but a Spirit-filled body of believers united in Christ. The “One” Church speaks of unity amidst diversity—many nations, languages, and cultures, yet one faith and one baptism. The “Holy” Church is not holy because of human perfection, but because it is continually sanctified by God’s grace. The “Catholic” Church is universal, embracing all peoples and all corners of the world. The “Apostolic” Church stands firm on the foundation of the apostles, faithfully passing on the teaching and mission of Christ.

Pentecost reminds us that the Church is always being renewed. The same Spirit who empowered the first disciples continues to breathe life into every generation—calling the fearful to courage, the weary to hope, and the divided to communion. It is a reminder that faith is not meant to remain inside churches alone, but to be lived in families, communities, and the world.

So as we say, “Happy Birthday, One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church,” we are also praying: Come, Holy Spirit, renew Your Church once more. Ignite our hearts with love, strengthen our faith, and send us forth as witnesses of Christ’s living presence in the world today.
