FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT
A reflection by: Bro. Sean Axl Hipona
______________
The days before the flood that wreaked havoc in Noah's day are compared in the gospel to the day the Son of Man returns. Only Noah was prepared at that time. The others were occupied eating, drinking, and getting married. That was up till the unexpected flood arrived. They were all engrossed in feeding their physical desires. Then, instead of in a literal sense, we are urged to be alert so that we are constantly ready for the times when Christ manifests Himself to us.
Now that we've got a better perspective, we might draw two pictures: one with the flood and one with the coming of our Savior. Looking at the flood first. What does it actually stand for? These are the kinds of things that have the power to drastically alter our life. We have the option of preparing for it and dealing with it, just as Noah did, or letting everyday concerns consume us. Another is the arrival of the Son of Man. One could say that although it may not always appear like the day of judgment, these are the unanticipated times when Christ comes to our hearts. Are we ready to acknowledge and embrace Him? Or do we not even notice His presence? When He chooses to reveal Himself to us, we should make the decision to accept Him and give him permission to use us as tools to enhance the lives of others.
All in all, we should be vigilant as Christ's servants. We, as servants, must be equipped to handle the challenges life brings us. Whenever Christ knocks on our hearts, we should always be able to recognize Him. Because we can't predict the future, let's be ready to receive our Lord today.
For tomorrow is uncertain, let's eliminate the distractions and focus our attention towards the most important matter, our preparation for the Savior's coming.
