📖 THE APOSTOLIC LIFESTYLE
🔍 Practical Holiness by Dr. David K. Bernard
✨ INTRODUCTION
“But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison” (James 3:8). ⚠️
“Let the words of my mouth . . . be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD” (Psalm 19:14). 🙏
✨ UNRULY MEMBER 👅
The tongue is the most difficult member of the body to control, and it has the potential for causing the greatest harm. ⚠️ The way we use our tongue is a clear indication of our relationship with God. ❤️
The tongue speaks whatever is in the heart. If a person speaks evil, then evil must be in the heart, “for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh” (Matthew 12:34). “Those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man” (Matthew 15:18). 💭➡️🗣️
James gives strong teaching concerning the tongue. “If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man’s religion is vain” (James 1:26). “If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body” (James 3:2).
He compares the tongue to a bit in a horse’s mouth 🐎, a small helm that controls a large ship 🚢, and a small fire that can cause great destruction 🔥. The tongue can defile the whole body, and only the power of God can tame it (James 3:1–13). ✝️
This is one reason why God has chosen speaking in tongues as the initial evidence of the baptism of the Holy Spirit 🔥 (Acts 2:4; 10:46; 19:6). We receive the Holy Ghost when we repent, believe, and fully surrender to God 🙌. The tongue is the hardest member to yield, so it is often the last part of us to come under God’s control. When we speak in tongues under the inspiration of the Spirit, it signifies that God has taken complete control of our lives 🕊️.
James makes it clear that it is easy to sin with the tongue, that the tongue is dangerous, and that sinning with the tongue can destroy holiness ⚠️. This leads to an important question:
👉 In what ways can we sin with the tongue?
