Jairus is a well-known figure in the New Testament of the Bible. He appears in three of the Gospels: Matthew 9:18–26, Mark 5:21–43, and Luke 8:40–56.
Here’s what the Bible tells us about him:
His Role: Jairus was a synagogue ruler (or leader). This means he was a respected Jewish community leader responsible for managing the synagogue’s activities and worship services.
His Story: Jairus came to Jesus with great faith and humility, pleading with Him to heal his dying daughter. While Jesus was on the way to Jairus’ house, people came with news that the girl had already died. But Jesus encouraged Jairus, saying, “Don’t be afraid; just believe.”
The Miracle: When Jesus arrived, He told the mourners that the girl was not dead but only sleeping. They laughed at Him, but He went into the room with Peter, James, John, and the girl’s parents, took the girl by the hand, and said, “Talitha koum!” (Aramaic for “Little girl, I say to you, get up!”).
Immediately, the girl—who was about 12 years old—got up and began to walk around.
Key Lessons from Jairus’ Story:
Faith in Jesus: Jairus showed faith by seeking Jesus’ help despite being a respected synagogue leader (many religious leaders opposed Jesus).
Trust in God’s Timing: Even when the situation seemed hopeless, Jesus brought life and hope.
Compassion of Jesus: The miracle shows Jesus’ power over death and His care for individuals and their families.
