Word Today
Luke 1:57-66, 80
06/24/24

Today we joyfully celebrate the birth of a great man: St. John the Baptist. It is one of the three birthdays that the whole church celebrates in the liturgical year; the other two are those of Jesus December 25 and Mary September 8. John’s birth has many marvelous elements. It was foretold by an angel to his aged father Zacharia while he was serving in the temple Luke 1:16-17. And when Mary’s greeting reached the ears of his mother Elizabeth, John leaped for joy Luke 1:41.

Today’s feast should also give us a renewed appreciation of our own lives. God has called each of us into being; he wants us to be, even before our conception God knew our names, as well as the unique mission he had in mind for us. with God, there are no accidents. Every person exists by God’s deliberate choice. Brothers and sisters, valuing our own lives is part of faith.

The celebration of today’s feast is an occasion to strengthen our respect for the value of each human life. Each human person conceived is known by God, willed by God, and named by God. Human life is sacred because from its beginning it involves the creative action of God, and it remains forever in a special relationship with the creator. God alone is the Lord of life from its beginning until its end: no one can under any circumstance claim for himself the right directly to destroy an innocent human being.

Mama Mary, may we cherish more each day the value of life in ourselves and others.
Shalom.

Word Today
Mark 12:13-14
06/04/24

Jesus, who declared I am the Truth is the perfect revelation of honesty in human behavior. We who are followers of Jesus, followers of the truth, are, to be honest and straightforward, not basing our statements on what others like to hear but on truth. The Pharisees are not honest with Jesus, they have a hidden agenda though it is not hidden from Jesus, the passage says that he made his answer, knowing their hypocrisy. Meaning, pretension, duplicity, deception. It is the opposite of honesty and sincerity.

Brothers and sisters, this is a precious lesson. In our hypocrisy, we tend to make a show of respecting the government, represented by Ceasar, not being caught is the only important goal. Brothers and sisters, if we are honest, we do what is right and just, even if no one knows the difference. The Word of God teaches us to pay our proper taxes, not to cheat like hypocrites. The lesson of Jesus, put it this way, pay all their dues, taxes to whom taxes are due, toll to whom toll is due, respect to whom respect is due, honor to whom honor is due Rom. 13:7.

Brothers and sisters, our supreme obligation, is to God, not to Ceasar. The more should we repay to God what belongs to God. The principle of giving to God puts all our priorities in the right order. We have the responsibility for material things, property, and money, but these will all pass away. Brothers and sisters, passing things are trivial compared to what will last, that is, what belongs to God. Brothers and sisters, when we are committed to the truth and to love in truth, we are at peace.

Mama Mary, may we always give the highest priority to the things of God.
Shalom.

Word Today
Mark 9:38-40
05/22/24

The Gospel gives us further insight into the wisdom that comes with humility. Jesus teaches us that our pride can get in the way of our ability to recognize his work in the efforts of others. Brothers and sisters, humility is known and accepting the truth of who we are including our need for a savior. Through the merciful love of God, we come to know who we are and whose we are. We are creatures; God is the Creator. Brothers and sisters, the truth is that we are dependent upon him for our every breath, at every moment.

Brothers and sisters, jealousy can make even the good actions of others look bad in our eyes. When someone else is getting attention, our nature feels slighted. We do not like to share the limelight with anyone else. Jesus is quick to correct this error. He counsels us to be broad-minded and big-hearted. Brothers and sisters, we should take the position that whoever is not against us is for us Mark 9:40. Then we will not prevent anyone from doing what is good.

Brothers and sisters, we will never have enough money to pay for our sins. In no way can a man redeem himself; or pay his ransom to God; brothers and sisters, it is too high a price to redeem one’s life; He would never have enough. Brothers and sisters, the truly wealthy ones are those whose treasure is the Lord, blessed are the poor in spirit; the kingdom of heaven is their Matt 5:3.

Mama Mary, guide us to be humble and more trusting in the Lord.
Shalom.

Word Today
John 21:15-19
05/17/24

In today’s Gospel, John recounts Jesus’ three-fold commission to Peter to care for his flock. Peter denied Jesus three times. After the resurrection, Jesus repeated the exhortation that Peter feeding or tending his sheep was not only a strong recommissioning but also a three-fold absolution for his shameful denials. Three times Jesus asks Peter do you love me? Brothers and sisters, it appears that Jesus intends to bring Peter and us as well to a deeper level of love. The love which the Good Shepherd showed in laying down his life for his flock.

Brothers and sisters, when we realized that he loved us and chose us and that he did not hold our sins against us, we were happy to dedicate ourselves to him. Brothers and sisters, Peter was given the grace of a martyr’s death, the kind of death by which he would glorify God. We also glorify God by our death, that is, by our self-sacrificing love, by our willingness to love even those who offend or persecute us. this is a witness that the world needs to see.

Brothers and sisters, we are aware of our unworthiness and weakness. On our own, we cannot love as we are called to love, and we cannot bear witness to Jesus, so we await his gifts of divine power. We are grateful that Jesus reveals to us the love of the Father, who shows us the way of self-emptying love and fills us with the spirit of love. Brothers and sisters, if Jesus asks us, do you love me? If we say yes, and he says come follow me! Feed my sheep! And Mary tells us: Do whatever he tells you.

Mama Mary, form our hearts in gratitude and praise.
Shalom.
