"When you pray, go to your inner room, close the door, and pray to your Father in secret"

Those who seek the unseen God, seek him in their hearts and hidden thoughts, not in loud words, as if he were far off from them. Such men would retire from the world into places where no human eye saw them, there to meet him humbly and in faith, who is "about their path, and about their bed, and spieth out all their ways." And he, the Searcher of hearts (Rm 9,27), would reward them openly. Prayers uttered in secret, according to God's will, are treasured up in God's Book of Life (Ps 68[69],29). They seem, perhaps, to have sought an answer here, and to have failed. Their memory perishes even in the mind of the petitioner, and the world never knew of them. But God is ever mindful, and in the last day, when the books are opened (Dn 7,10; Rv 20,12), they shall be disclosed and rewarded before the whole world...

Now, we know well enough that we are bound to be in one sense in prayer and meditation all the day long (Lk 18,1). The question then arises... need we pray at certain times of the day in a set manner?... Though set times and forms of prayer are not absolutely necessary in private prayer, yet they are highly expedient; or rather, times are actually commanded us by our Lord in the text, "Thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet...” Even our Saviour had his peculiar seasons of communing with God. His thoughts indeed were one continued sacred service offered up to his Father; nevertheless, we read of his going up "into a mountain apart to pray," and again, of his "continuing all night in prayer to God" (Mt 14,23; Lc 6,12).

Now it is necessary to insist upon this duty of observing private prayer at stated times, because amid the cares and hurry of life men are very apt to neglect it: and it is a much more important duty than it is generally considered, even by those who perform it.

REFLECTION

We talk about the shortage of vocations. We wonder about a time when hundreds joined every year. This brings sup all sorts of questions about the future of the church. Today, Vocations Sunday is not about priesthood only, or religious life. The first big moment of vocation is baptism. The anointing of chrism is the anointing of vocation.

Witness, Love and Service
The baptismal vocation is for Witness, Love and Service. This will be expressed in ways in which people take on their baptism. In married life, single life – within the single life, religious life, priesthood.

Witness – to our faith, the love of God. To the life and the values of Jesus in our lives. Teaching is not itself a vocation for example but the way we teach is a way of living out our vocation.

Love – the ordinary relationships of life. In the special promise of marriage, in family and in friendship. Any love is a sharing in the love of God and a sharing of the love of God. In the moments of unselfish love in any relationship we are living out the vocation. When you love, you are doing God’s will!

Service – the wider world. Love of the poorer world, here and elsewhere. A way of welcoming the strange. Christian love doesn’t always mean knowing a person. We want to make the lives of all deserving of the name human.

Lord, be with me as I offer myself in partnership with you to work in your world.

It was as though scales fell away from his eyes.

For those of us who have grown into faith gradually and over time, Saul’s story of conversion is very powerful. It is such a profound turn-around. God moves in a very decisive way. Saul responds just as decisively, following the instructions he was given without hesitation or question. Are we listening for God’s voice? If we heard God’s voice what would our response be? We can take heart in the fact that what happened to Saul was so extraordinary that it would appear there was no way he could even question it was God. The extraordinary can happen in the midst of the very ordinary moments of life. When we pray—give me eyes to see, ears to hear and a heart to respond—let us hope we’re ready for what might actually happen!
