The church begins in near-total darknessβ€”representing a world without Christ. When the Paschal Candle is lit, it symbolizes the risen Christ as the light of the world. As that single flame is shared from person to person, candle to candle, the darkness is gradually overcome.

By the time the whole church is illuminated, it visually proclaims the victory of life over death and hope over despairβ€”central themes of Easter.
