ππππππ|| In light of the circulating video wherein the interviewed farmer mentioned that chayote (sayote) from Baguio is allegedly treated with formalin to extend its shelf life, the "Agribusiness How It Works" YouTube channel, where the information originated, has since apologized and removed the video material for revision, acknowledging the error made and further assuring that such misinformation will not be repeated.
The Department of Agriculture β Cordillera also assures the public that vegetables from the region are safe, fresh, and produced under strict safety protocols, particularly those with Organic Agriculture (OA) and Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) certifications.
The agency actively promotes OA and GAP to ensure safe and quality food production. At present, there are 52 organic certified farmers cultivating 12.52 hectares, and 644 GAP certified farmers across the region, with Benguet accounting for 495 farms.
GAP farmers ensure minimal use of chemicals, proper waste management, and safe handling from harvest to market. Farmers also do not use preservatives; produce is only washed with clean, potable water before packing and delivery.
To guarantee safety, the agency and the Bureau of Plant Industry also conduct regular farm inspections, certification renewals, pesticide residue monitoring, and laboratory testing. Cold chain and post-harvest facilities also help maintain freshness and reduce spoilage. Community trainings and information campaigns further guide farmers in safe and quality production.
DA-CAR urges the public to rely only on verified advisories and continues to assure consumers that vegetables from the Cordillera are safe, high-quality, and thrive naturally in the regionβs cool climate and fertile highland soils.//
