August 15 | Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Today, August 15, the Catholic Church celebrates one of the most beautiful mysteries of our faith: the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Mary was not simply given a place of honor in Heaven.

The Church teaches that, at the completion of her earthly life, she was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory. This is the dogma solemnly defined by Pope Pius XII on November 1, 1950, in Munificentissimus Deus.

Mary's Assumption is not something that happened through her own power.

It is a grace given to her by God because of her unique participation in the mystery of Christ. Her entire life was united to her Son—from the Annunciation to Bethlehem, from Calvary to the Resurrection.

And now, she shares in the glory of her risen Son.

The Assumption reminds us that death does not have the final word.

Jesus Christ conquered sin and death through His Passion, Death, and Resurrection. Mary's glorification gives us a glimpse of the destiny God promises His faithful children.

As Pope Benedict XVI explained, Mary's Assumption confirms her complete solidarity with Christ in both His struggle against sin and His victory over death.

Mary also did not become distant from us after entering Heaven.

She remains our Mother.

She continues to intercede for her children and points us toward Jesus. Her Assumption calls us not merely to admire her, but to imitate her faith, humility, obedience, and love.

Mary once said:

“Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord.”

She trusted God completely.

She accepted His will.

She carried Christ within her.

She stood faithfully beneath the Cross.

And she remained united to Him until the end.

Now she reigns with Christ in heavenly glory.

Her Assumption gives every Christian a reason to hope.

One day, if we remain faithful to Christ, we too hope to share in the glory of the Resurrection.

So today, let us look toward Heaven with Mary.

When life becomes difficult, remember where we are going.

When suffering feels overwhelming, remember that this world is not our final home.

When death causes fear, remember the promise of the Resurrection.

And when you feel far from God, take Mary's hand and ask her to lead you closer to her Son.

Holy Mary, Mother of God and Queen of Heaven, pray for us.

May her Assumption strengthen our hope, deepen our faith, and remind us that our ultimate treasure is not here on earth, but in Heaven with Christ.

🙏 Blessed Virgin Mary, assumed body and soul into Heaven, pray for us!

✝️ Happy Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary!

St. James the Greater: Patron of Batuan, Bohol

Every 25th of July, the faithful of Batuan, Bohol gather in joyful celebration to honor St. James the Greater (Santiago Apostol), the beloved patron of the town and its parish. More than a yearly tradition, the feast is a profound expression of faith, gratitude, and the enduring relationship between the people of Batuan and one of Christ's closest Apostles.

St. James the Greater was the son of Zebedee and Salome, and the elder brother of St. John the Evangelist. A humble fisherman by trade, he left everything when Jesus called him to become a "fisher of men." Together with Peter and John, James belonged to the Lord's innermost circle of disciples. He witnessed some of the most significant moments in Christ's earthly ministry, including the Transfiguration on Mount Tabor, the raising of Jairus' daughter, and Jesus' agony in the Garden of Gethsemane.

Following the Resurrection of Christ, St. James courageously preached the Gospel despite intense persecution. According to the Acts of the Apostles (Acts 12:1–2), he became the first of the Twelve Apostles to be martyred, beheaded by order of King Herod Agrippa around the year A.D. 44. His unwavering fidelity to Christ until death has made him a powerful model of courage, missionary zeal, and sacrificial love.

Throughout Christian history, St. James has been especially venerated as the patron of pilgrims. Tradition holds that after proclaiming the Gospel, his relics were eventually brought to Santiago de Compostela in Spain, one of Christianity's most revered pilgrimage destinations. The familiar pilgrim's staff, scallop shell, and traveler's cloak have become enduring symbols of his mission, reminding Christians that every believer is a pilgrim journeying toward God.

The devotion to St. James the Greater in Batuan dates back to the establishment of the parish under his patronage. On January 27, 1938, Batuan was officially erected as a parish with St. James the Apostle as its patron saint, and since then the town has faithfully celebrated his feast every July 25. Through generations, Batuananons have entrusted their families, livelihoods, and community to his intercession. The annual fiesta has become not only a civic celebration but, more importantly, a renewal of the people's baptismal commitment to live as missionary disciples of Christ.

The devotion of Batuan to St. James is a reminder that holiness is not reserved for extraordinary people. Like James, every Christian is called to leave behind fear, follow Christ wholeheartedly, proclaim the Gospel with conviction, and persevere faithfully until the end. As pilgrims of hope, may the people of Batuan continue to draw inspiration from their heavenly patron, whose life points always to Jesus Christ.

St. James the Greater, Patron of Batuan, pray for us.
