Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me" (Psalm 51:10) and "Even now," declares the Lord, "return to me with all your heart" (Joel 2:12).
Ash wednesday marks the beginning of lent, a season of mourning of Jesus's Death, and a preparation for easter. The palms that are burnt down that turns into ashes that is placed in our forehead in a shape of a cross, symbolizes repentance and commitment from God. The season of lent is the start of fasting and penitance. This action is a sign of reverence, mourning, an effort to join Christ's suffering, making more rooms for God in our lives, and a practice of holy habits that will help us grow in virtue. The purpose of fasting and penitance during the lenten season is because Jesus fasted for 40 days before his death on the cross. In order to remember how he sacrificed himself just to save us from our sins, we do this in remembrance of his sacrifice and to thank Him for it.
Joel 2:12-18: "Return to me with your whole heart, with fasting, and weeping, and mourning"
