James 4:6–10 KJV: 6 Lessons on Humility
Scripture Reference

"But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble. Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded. Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness. Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up." — James 4:6–10📖

An Example of a Prideful Man
King Nebuchadnezzar (Daniel 4:30–37) — Boasted in his own power and kingdom until God humbled him to teach him sovereignty.

6 Things James Teaches Us About Humility
Humility Keeps You Teachable
Submitting to God requires a willing heart that learns from His Word.

Humility Keeps You Close to God
Drawing near to God invites Him to draw near to you.

Humility Keeps You from Offending Others
Purifying your heart and actions prevents strife and self-righteous behavior.

Humility Keeps You from Self-Distraction
Resisting worldly desires and the devil keeps your spiritual focus clear.

Humility Keeps You Focused on the Mission
Surrendering your will allows God to elevate and use you for His purpose.

Humility Keeps You Dependent on Grace
Recognizing your need for God brings His abundant grace into your life.

"Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up." — James 4:10

Sometimes we become so used to pretending that we even bring the mask into God's presence.

We say,
"I'm okay."
"I'm fine."
"I'm doing well."

But deep inside, we are tired.
We are hurting.
We are carrying things we were never meant to carry alone.

And the beautiful thing about God is this:
You don't have to pretend before the One who already knows everything.
You don't have to hide your tears.
You don't have to explain every wound.
You don't have to prove that you are strong enough.

God already sees the parts of you that nobody else sees.

The prayers you couldn't finish.
The tears you couldn't explain.
The battles you fought in silence.

And He does not turn away.

Sometimes we think we need to fix ourselves before coming to God.
But God never asked broken people to become whole before approaching Him.

We come to Him because He is the One who makes us whole.

David brought his fears.
Hannah brought her tears.
Elijah brought his exhaustion.
Even Jesus, in His deepest sorrow, brought His heart before the Father.

God is not intimidated by your emotions.

Your sadness does not scare Him.
Your questions do not offend Him.
Your weakness does not disappoint Him.

He is not only present when you are worshiping with joy.
He is also present when you are crying in surrender.

Maybe today, you don't need another performance.
Maybe you need a moment of honesty with God.

Tell Him what hurts.
Tell Him what you fear.
Tell Him what you cannot carry anymore.

Because healing begins when we stop hiding the places that need to be healed.

You don't have to impress God.
You don't have to earn His love.
You don't have to pretend you're okay.

Come as you are.

Because the God who sees your brokenness is the same God who restores it.
