Safeguards from doctrinal error

1. "When it is true it is not new, when it is new it is not true" I heard that phrase when I was in hermeneutics class. If there is a temptation to embrace a "new" teaching it is wise to ask when it was popularized? and who are the proponents? Not because a teaching is in the internet and well presented you will believe it immediately
If somebody teaches a new doctrine, 99 percent of the possibility is he got it from a book or he discovered it in the internet. The same thing that we teach old truths, but we learned it from theology books or heard from lectures of people we trust.

2. " When the clear passage of Scripture makes sense seek no other sense"
There are times that Bible students are trying to dig deeper on the passage when it already makes sense.

3. A truth, a doctrine you believe and teach must be explicitly stated in the Bible. If it is not explicitly stated in the Bible you have no authority at all to say " thus saith the Lord". So When John Calvin taught that there were pre Adamic race, that Genesis 1:27 does not refer to Adam and Eve he did not have a verse to back it up. But when you say, Adam and Eve were the first people and that Genesis 1:27 refers to them, you can say "Thus saith the Lord". Because Moses said it is " This is the book of the generations of Adam. In the day that God created man, in the likeness of God made he him; Male and female created he them; and blessed them, and called their name Adam, in the day when the were created" Gen 5:1,2. You do not need to go very far to understand if Genesis 1:27 refers to Adam and Eve.
Paul said it is " The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit " I Cor. 15:45. Here we see an explicit statement that Adam was the first man. There was no mankind before him.
Jesus said it is " Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female, and said, for this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh" Matthew 19:4,5. You will notice that Jesus combined Genesis 1:27 and Genesis 2:24 because the male and female in Gen. 1:27 is The Adam and woman in Gen. 2:20-25.

4. If you are the only one who embrace a certain teaching among others there is a high possibility that you are embracing a wrong teaching.We should not forget the first church council in Jerusalem ( to solve a false doctrine). We should not forget what Paul said to Timothy to separate from a brother who teaches another doctrine II Thess. 3:6.
And we should always remember that the Canon of the Scriptures were decided by the majority of Churches. In the same way that our safety in embracing a certain teaching is making it sure that it is also embraced by the majority. It is not always good to be out of the box so to speak. JLI.

There is no such thing as Christian in the NT, but does not come to the assembly regularly for the worship of God except for unavoidable circumstances and emergencies. "Examine whether you are in the faith".
