EVEOLVE MENTORING MASTERCLASS #5 | Mentees inspired by Lesieli Taviri’s faith-fueled leadership insights

OUR mentees were privileged to engage in a powerful and inspiring session over the weekend with Lesieli Taviri, CEO of the PNG Sustainable Development Program, who spoke on the theme: “Faith and Career: What Godly Leadership Looks Like in the Secular World.”

They were given a rare opportunity to hear firsthand from one of Papua New Guinea’s most accomplished and values-driven leaders, who shared from both her professional journey and personal convictions, offering rich takeaways on leadership, faith, and growth.

Key takeaways from the dialogue were:
1. Hate Failure, But Grow from It: Rather than romanticise failure, Ms. Taviri emphasised that disliking failure can fuel resilience and push us to do better — a mindset shift for many.
2. Lead with Purpose, Not for Titles: True leadership is grounded in passion and purpose. It’s not about position or privilege, but about people and positive impact.
3. Collaboration is Powerful: Inspiring others and working together are critical in achieving meaningful goals. Leadership is a shared effort.
4. Step Into Challenge: Growth doesn’t happen in comfort zones. Taking on challenges, even when they’re intimidating, is essential for development.
5. Stay Authentic: Don’t change who you are to suit the crowd or a job. Be grounded in your values and choose paths that align with your identity and purpose.
6. Be a Lifelong Learner: Continuously expand your knowledge — not just in your field, but across disciplines. Curiosity is a key leadership trait.
7. Master Time and Networking: Ms. Taviri shared her personal principle: “I am either working or networking.” Time is a resource, and intentional networking is critical for building future support systems.
8. Let Faith Anchor You: In times of ethical dilemma or high pressure, her advice was simple and personal: “Take a break and read your Bible.” Faith should guide and ground your decision-making.
9. Be Hungry, Stay Humble: Ambition must be paired with humility. Approach opportunities with intentionality and always be prepared to add value.
10. Honour the Process, Not Personal Gain: In leadership roles, it’s vital to avoid personal agendas. Decisions should be guided by process and integrity, not personal interest.

Participants described the session as transformative with mentee Florence Pill saying that, “It was more than just a talk — it was a masterclass on living and leading with conviction.”

Alice Gabi, a STEM student who resonated with Ms. Taviri’s academic background, added, “I am inspired to build both my career and my character.”

The session serves as a valuable reminder that godly leadership in secular spaces is not only possible — it’s powerful.

EVEOLVE MENTORING | From Passion to Purpose: EVEolve mentees network with PNG’s resilient business leaders

By Alice Gabi - EVEolve mentee

ON THURSDAY, 21st August 2025, Florence Pill, Cephas Aroga, and I had the privilege of representing EVE Magazine at the Media & Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) Networking Event hosted by ABC International Development (ABCID PNG). Held at the Athenian Conference Room, Lamana Hotel, from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm, the event centered around the theme: “Hustle Hub – Spotlighting Local Business Resilience.”

This exclusive gathering brought together key figures from media and civil society to foster collaboration and explore opportunities for meaningful impact. Key presenters included representatives from the Christian Professional Network, MiBank, SME Corporation, and Women’s Micro Bank. Also in attendance were teams from Radio Maria, the Salvation Army, Marie Stopes, and LYKES Consultancy.

Throughout the morning, powerful stories and reflections were shared, each highlighting resilience and innovation within Papua New Guinea’s business landscape. One moment that particularly stood out to me came during the networking session when I met Jimmy Matapi Peter, Founder of LYKES Consultancy. He shared a piece of advice that struck a chord:
“While you are still young, do whatever you want to do, because when you grow old like me, it won’t be easy.”
It was a rare and thought-provoking insight that has stayed with me.

I also had the pleasure of connecting with individuals from Radio Maria and the Salvation Army and was especially inspired by Tracey Madai, Project Coordinator – Partnerships at the Media Development Initiative, who graciously hosted the event.

A heartfelt thank you to Imelda Siaguru and Priscilla Raepom for giving us the opportunity to attend and engage with some of Papua New Guinea’s most impactful changemakers. It was both a humbling and eye-opening experience. Hearing each speaker passionately share their vision and stories—how they’re striving to transform PNG through their businesses and work—was truly inspiring.

EVEOLVE MENTORING MASTERCLASS #4

🌟 Storytime with Dame Carol Kidu 🌟

OUR EVEolve Mentoring Masterclass mentees had the incredible honour of joining a special storytime session with one of Papua New Guinea’s national treasures—Dame Carol Kidu, DBE AO.

Held at the beautiful Tutu Beach Retreat in Taurama and hosted by the Business and Professional Women’s Club Bpw Port Moresby —which Dame Carol co-founded in 1982—this session was filled with wisdom, inspiration, and powerful storytelling.

Dame Carol shared her extraordinary journey: from her early life as a young Australian woman who wholeheartedly embraced the Motuan culture of Central Province after marrying Sir Buri Kidu—PNG’s first indigenous Chief Justice—to becoming a three-term Member of Parliament (MP) and receiving a damehood for her distinguished service to her adopted homeland.

A teacher by profession, she entered politics in 1997 as an independent MP for the Port Moresby South electorate. From 2002 to 2012, she was the only woman in Parliament. She also became the longest-serving Minister for Community Development (2002–2011), serving under the late Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare. In 2012, she made history as PNG’s first female Leader of the Opposition (February to July), before retiring from politics.

Dame Carol’s unwavering commitment to education and the empowerment of women leaders deeply resonated with our mentees, who are final-year student leaders at University of Papua New Guinea. Her story inspired them to lead with courage, cultural humility, and a steadfast commitment to social justice.

This masterclass was a powerful reminder of the kind of leadership that endures—one rooted in passion, resilience, and a profound respect for people and community.

Thank you, Dame Carol, for sharing your journey with the next generation of aspiring leaders.

EVEOLVE MENTORING MASTERCLASS | “Breaking Chains” Networking Event

By Cephas Arogai and Gurame Moiya

On Friday, 18th July 2025, Cephas Agro and I (Gurame Moiya), had the privilege of representing Eve Magazine at the “Breaking Chains” Media & CSOs Networking Event, hosted by ABCID PNG – MDI (Media Development Initiative). The event was held at the Hilton Hotel’s Tabari, Hekari & Sisibia Conference Rooms.

This important gathering aimed to raise awareness about the growing humanitarian issue of human trafficking and to strengthen partnerships among media, civil society, and organiations committed to combating this global challenge.

The event featured impactful presentations from three key speakers:
1. Ms. Rasoe Walen — Femili PNG & Bel Isi
2. Mr. David James Arnold — Chief of Mission, International Organisation for Migration (IOM)
3. Major Velen Iga — The Salvation Army, PNG & Solomon Islands Territory

Each speaker provided insights into the work their organisations are doing to support survivors, prevent exploitation, and improve coordination in the fight against human trafficking.

Following the presentations, there was an interactive Q&A session, where participants, including ourselves, raised questions and engaged in discussions. The session was followed by a networking period, where we connected with other participants to share ideas and discuss possible collaborations.

This event provided a valuable platform for learning, sharing experiences, and advocating for stronger efforts to “Break the Chains” of trafficking in persons. It also gave us, as student contributors of Eve Magazine, the opportunity to understand the real challenges faced by frontline organisations and reflect on how media can amplify their efforts.

EVEOLVE MENTORING MASTERCLASS #3

🌟 Your Voice Is Your Power 🌟

In our recent EVEolve mentoring session, we had the honour of learning from the inspiring Dulciana Somare-Brash — Development Specialist, Thought Leader, and Founder - Inclusive Futures Think Tank.
Dulciana reminded us that “Voice is more than what you say — it’s the legacy you leave behind.” 💬🔥

With experience across non-profit, political advisory, crisis management, sustainable development, and CSR, she brought authenticity and wisdom to the discussion on “Find Your Voice: How to Communicate with Influence” with our mentees.

💡 True influence doesn’t come from speaking the loudest — it comes from speaking with purpose.

Thank you, Dulciana, for challenging us to lead with courage and communicate with intention. 💛

Thank you for being so generous - with your time, knowledge, wisdom and ideas. 🙏🏽

EVEOLVE MENTORING MASTERCLASS #2

✨ Stop Dreaming, Start Doing! ✨

Huge thanks to Kila Kilaverave —an engineer, Founder of CrossFit POM, and Calvary Church POM Campus Leader — for sharing his powerful message on the topic "Pioneering Spirit: Stop Dreaming, Start Doing."

Kila is a true definition of a modern-day pioneer — balancing faith, fitness, family and an illustrious career in engineering. His journey is proof that bold dreams demand bold action.

He challenged our mentees to break free from just dreaming and step boldly into action, reminding everyone that every journey to success should begin with making the first step correctly and safely.

His blend of leadership, faith, and entrepreneurial spirit truly inspired all who attended.

To our cohort who took up the CrossFit workout challenge, thank you for your energy and engagement! Let’s keep the momentum going — it’s time to turn vision into reality.

Stay tuned for more empowering sessions from EVEolve. Together, we rise! 💪🔥
