The Life and Legacy of Chief Pastor Papi Keso
Celebrating 70 years of Ministry Anniversary for Chief Pastor Papi Keso of the Apostolic Church. His life is a remarkable story of faith, sacrifice, and leadership that has profoundly shaped the Apostolic Church in Papua New Guinea.
Born in Enga in 1933, Papi Keso's early life was marked by significant historical events. Growing up during a time of great change, he witnessed the impact of World War II at the young age of 12. In 1954, the arrival of Apostolic Church missionaries in his village marked a turning point. Young Papi humbly served as a “haus boi,” assisting with daily tasks such as carrying firewood and water. Through this service, his faith deepened, leading him to accept Christ in 1958. He was baptized in the Lagaip River two years later, an event that set the course for his life’s mission.
Education played a crucial role in his development. After completing his studies in Enga, Western, and Hela, he graduated as a teacher in 1970. Papi dedicated himself to education, even founding Wapele Primary School in 1980. However, his calling to ministry was undeniable. In 1986, he transitioned from teaching to full-time service at Mamale Apostolic Church, fully committing to his spiritual path.
As the Apostolic Church of PNG gained autonomy in 1981, Papi was instrumental in building its administrative structure. His leadership qualities quickly became evident, leading to his rise in national leadership. In 1997, he became the president of ACPNG, where he established national youth and women’s ministries and guided the drafting of the church constitution. His influence extended beyond the church, as he served as a trusted ward councilor and community leader.
In 2021, he was honored with the title of “Chief Pastor.” Even in his later years, he continued to serve with unwavering dedication, founding the Gerehu Healing Center in 2018 and authoring a leadership guidebook in 2024.
Congratulations, Chief.
