“If You Feel Remorse Over Sin, Rejoice! That Is Holy Spirit Conviction.” — John 16:8
Jesus said:
“And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:”
John 16:8 (KJV)
This quote reflects a biblical truth. When a person feels genuine sorrow, guilt, or conviction over sin, it can be evidence that the Holy Spirit is working in their heart. The Holy Spirit does not condemn God's children to hopelessness; He convicts them so they will repent and return to the Lord.
Many people today are comfortable in their sin and feel no burden for offending God. But when your heart is troubled because you have sinned, that is often the Spirit showing you that your ways are not pleasing to God. Conviction is a sign that God has not left you alone.
King David experienced this after his sin. He cried:
“For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me.”
Psalm 51:3 (KJV)
Notice that true conviction does not merely produce regret—it leads to repentance. The goal is not to remain in shame but to run to Christ for forgiveness.
The Apostle Paul wrote:
“For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of...”
2 Corinthians 7:10 (KJV)
Satan wants conviction to become despair, but God intends conviction to lead to restoration. When the Holy Spirit exposes sin, He is pointing us toward the cross, where Jesus paid the penalty for that sin.
Therefore, if you feel remorse over sin, do not ignore it. Do not harden your heart. Humble yourself before God, confess your sin, and trust in Christ.
“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
1 John 1:9 (KJV)
Conviction is not the voice of a God pushing you away; it is often the voice of a loving God calling you back to Himself. Repent, believe, and rejoice that the Holy Spirit is still working in your heart. Amen.
