"Jesus came to show us how to be truly human."

This past Sunday, Rev Paul Fletcher reflected on a conversation with his 11-year-old son Ishmael, who recently asked to be baptised after a thoughtful personal journey of faith. When asked why Jesus came, Ishmael replied, “to show us how to be truly human.” Paul used this insight to explore John 17 and the nature of God as Trinity: a loving, joyful, trusting, generous, deeply connected community that invites people into relationship and fullness of life. Reflecting on this, the message considers how humans are made in the image of this relational God; becoming most fully human through God's community marked by their values of love, trust, generosity, welcome and purpose (among others!). It's starting!

In the days leading up to Pentecost Sunday, we’ll join Christians around the world in the ecumenical “10 Days of Prayer” (also known as “Thy Kingdom Come”). Together, we’ll create space to deepen our prayer lives — both personally and as a church community.

Each day will include morning and evening prayer, alongside different ways of praying and seeking God: worship, kids’ prayer, contemplative crafting (“pray-making”), and quiet space to pray alone in the chapel. You can download our helpful reminder schedule from our site.

Keep an eye out on our events page for the communal one-off events!

Plus, check out our ‘Prayer’ page for more info on how to book in to the 24/7 Prayer Room or to make a Prayer Appointment, to recieve focussed prayer, with our team.

Grace and peace.

This morning (Sunday 10th May) we are stoked to welcome back the fantastic Sam Harvey!

Sam is a super talented communicator - with a particular passion and longing for people to deepen their prayer lives and to deepen their desire to know and experience Jesus. As well as being a pastor, Sam is also the Lead Coordinator of 24-7 Prayer New Zealand. This will be a fantastic kōrero and worth bringing a friend or neighbour along to hear.

You can find us at the Newtown School Hall on Mein Street with our service kicking off at 10am (filter coffee and tea available beforehand from 9:30am). Please join us early for some great brews and relaxed kōrero.

Our tamariki and intermediate programs are all up and running as usual mid service - plenty joy and goodness in the mix!

(Side note - Sam will also be sharing tonight at the Anglican Movement Young Adult Worship Gathering - check our events page at sttomsnewtown.org.nz/events for details).

Grace and peace.

"To know Jesus is to know God. To know God is to know Jesus."

Rev Sophie Silvester recently wrestled with Christianity’s exclusive claims among a pluralistic world. She explored how Jesus invites us, into a relational, personal connection with God. Through a friends spiritual journey from New Age exploration to Christian faith, Sophie illustrates how Jesus offers a personal, knowable God who draws near to us; inviting us all to experience God as present and loving while maintaining confidence in Jesus’ unique claims—without arrogance.

Looking forward to gathering together this Sunday!

After another big week (and its been a big one...) its a gift to gather together and be reminded of 'whose we are' and 'who we are' as people loved and sustained by the God revealed in Jesus. If your around - come gather with us this Sunday at 10am (coffee and relaxed kōrero from 9:30 if keen).

As for this beauty of a crew - just a reminder that our youth group spaces have kicked off again. This particular team of legends (Taimana, Ephraim, Morgyn, Bella and Matt) lead our St Tom's Youth Group. You can find more info about our Youth Groups and spaces by having a yarn with any of this crew or by jumping on our youth section of the website at sttomsnewtown.org.nz/youth

Grace and peace. See you Sunday.

"Jesus means are congruent with his ends."

Recently, Chris Silvester reflected on the brokenness of the world and the hopes placed on Jesus at Palm Sunday, where crowds expected a powerful political rescuer. Instead, Jesus reveals a different kind of kingship—marked by humility, peace, and a mission far beyond national or tribal boundaries.

His way, rooted in love and nonviolence, offers true transformation, as seen in movements like the civil rights movement. Chris invited us to trust this unexpected path and to join Jesus in bringing justice and restoration through prayerful, compassionate action.
