Grayson's Legacy

Grayson's Legacy New Zealand's Colonial History from the 1850's comes alive in a novel about the shocking inheritance

In 1850, a nine year old boy living in London, England, is forcibly snatched out of a devastatingly broken family upon the disclosure of his father's infidelity. In the care of a guardian, this child loses everything familiar as he is shipped off as part of British colonial expansion in the Canterbury region of New Zealand supposedly 'for his own good'. As a result, little Grayson's life and sense

of identity are shattered and it seems a mysterious generational legacy propels his life into inexplicable tragedy and loss. Will a destructive family dynamic triumph, or will a transcendent power arrest the evil at work and release a positive inheritance upon this family?

‘The Power of One…’

This article’s title expresses a reality applicable to many individuals throughout history who in their own way have inspired, impacted and changed other’s lives for good. Some are well known, some not so much- the point is, there’s potential for any (one) to make a difference -somewhere.

In the early 1960’s a meteorologist and mathematician, Edward Lorenz presented his famous ‘butterfly theory’ which claimed the simple flapping of a butterfly’s wings could set in motion a chain reaction of air molecules that could ultimately cause a hurricane on the other side of the world. Thirty years later the theory was foundational in the scientific community and today it’s known as ‘the law of sensitive dependence upon initial conditions.’ Sounds lofty, but it’s simply observing ‘cause and effect’ that relates to much more than just butterflies!

One life and one action can set in motion far more than we realise. Like a single pebble thrown into a calm lake, the ripples repeat in concentric circles, seemingly ‘forever’…a picture of the ‘power of one’ to impact others in time and into the future.

Recently I re-visited the place where Wiremu Tāmihana laid down his taiaha before English General George Carey at Tāmahere in 1865. I’ve read and heard enough about this noble chief of Ngāti Hauā to convince me what a taonga (’treasure’) he is in New Zealand history, leaving ‘ripples’ of influence to be admired and exemplified. Born Tarapīpi, he came under the influence of Christian teachings with the establishment of the CMS station in Matamata. In 1839, Tarapīpi was one of Rev. A.N. Brown’s first converts to be baptised at which point he was given the name Wiremu Tāmihana. A man of peace (unlike his father Te Waharoa) who he’d succeeded upon his death in 1838, Tāmihana’s life was spent in seeking reconciliation and brokering peace on behalf of Waikato Māori with the Crown, known for its proclivity to deal dishonourably. During the late 1850’s Tāmihana became involved in the establishment of a Māori king. For this he earned the title 'Kingmaker' by Pākehā.

It’s moving standing where Tāmihana placed his taiaha on the ground those years ago. A great Māori chief who endured mis-understanding and stood as an advocate for justice is worth reflecting on. Many Pākehā saw Tāmihana’s action as ‘surrender’ whereas Tāmihāna described it in a letter to Governor Grey, as ‘te maungarongo’ (a covenant of peace). This magnanimous gesture followed two years of cruel colonial conquest- the Waikato ‘Land War’ began in winter 1863, with General Cameron’s columns of English soldiers marching south from Auckland on a campaign to dispossess Waikato Māori of their land and māna. Little more than 20 years after the Treaty of Waitangi signing!

The possibilities, of allowing the Spirit of God (Wairua Tapu) that graced Tāmihana’s life, to grace our lives, are worth contemplating.
A Māori proverb considers the dozens of seeds existing in one kauri cone (about 50 apparently)- each little seed sown into the soil is powerful, capable of becoming a mighty tree…
“He kakano ahau. Ahakoa he iti, he pounamu.”
I am a seed. Despite being small I am of great value.

I've noticed on a couple of occasions that "Grayson's Legacy" has been available in local public Libraries I've visited. Glad of its presence in such places as I believe the message it contains of 'inheritance' is so important to understand.
I'd love to send a copy (at no cost) to anyone who wanted to have a go at offering this book for inclusion at a public library near you. Message me with details if you're interested.

Grayson’s Legacy is an ‘historical’ novel…I chose names randomly and it certainly was not my intention in writing the story to reflect on any person either deceased or living.
Also, for the gerzillionth time and for the record in answer to the question…” is Grayson’s Legacy a depiction of your family’s background?” the story is not a veiled biographical sketch of anything I am aware of in my own ancestral line..!

Nonetheless, it seems to have struck a resonating chord which reflects aspects of the history of scores of many other people who have read the book and made contact to share some of their own story… I’m glad it is connecting with so many readers…

Writing a book means you are going to get reader's letters and many unsolicited comments. "Grayson's Legacy" somehow seems to be a book that provokes readers to want to tell their own stories...a lady who just read the book sent a fascinating letter writing about her great, great grandfather who as a boy was "transported" to Auckland in 1842 sailing from England on the 'St George' for allegedly stealing a horse when he was only 9-10 years old. He was one of nearly 100 youths who apparently weren't deemed to be bad enough to go to the convict settlement in New South Wales. In a sad account she detailed her
great great grandfather's life... Stirred by what she read, this lady wrote, "As I became absorbed in the story, I thought about 'attachment disorder' that is now recognised and treated in children who have not had the opportunity to bond with their parents or their parents were unable to bond with them. In a gentle uncomplicated way the author has produced a bo-peep into a very big issue. The answer.....? Society has a long way to go..." I hope increasingly that my attempt to tell one family's story, will open up others to look at the legacy they too carry from their forebears...

A review posted on amazon about "Grayson's Legacy" ...An intriguing, winsome novel with an engaging plot that unfolds in unexpected ways to arrive at a delightfully satisfying destination. It breathes historical authenticity, drawing the reader into the era in which the author has masterfully crafted and sculptured his characters. The feel of mid-19th century British colonization in New Zealand and the anguish of a displaced immigrant child are captured brilliantly as he struggles with sinister circumstances that threaten to engulf him. Well worth reading!

So looking forward to being with Northcity Church, Papanui, Christchurch...feel privileged to be hosted by Donald Scott and the team. We'll
introduce a South Island launch for "Grayson's Legacy" Sunday 22nd Sept. 1.00pm. I'm excited at the prospect of being in this amazing city (New Zealand's first!) and the 'place of origin' where my narrative originates in the 1850's...(Murray Smith)

Travelling about Ireland in recent days has been fascinating both in terms of becoming better acquainted with my own roots....family history, key places, and lots of stories...I have been provided with opportunities for discovery and abundant confirmation of the theme I wrote about in "Grayson's Legacy"....generational influences are real and of course encompass physically inherited traits...but it runs deeper. We all inherit things from our family line in a spiritual sense too. Invariably, the impact of this on our lives is likely to carry positive influence as well as influences which are less than 'helpful'. The exciting thing to me, is that for everyone, redemption is possible from any strand of negative generational influence and a life of personal freedom and an inheritance of abundance is fully available! I'd love you to get a copy of the book and see if there are ways that you might relate to the story...many have said this has been their experience.
