The second week of the Yarney summer retreat continued with the annual writing and composition activities at Ka-Nying Shedrub Ling Monastery.
Shedra students explored a range of topics related to Buddhist studies, reflecting on the teachings and expressing their understanding through thoughtful writing and composition. These weekly sessions provide an opportunity to deepen their studies, clarify their understanding, and put their learning into words.
The Yarney competitions will continue throughout the retreat, with Shedra students engaging each week in study, reflection, and expression.

Each year during the Yarney summer retreat, competitions in public speaking, debate, and composition are held. This year, participants explored and wrote on a range of topics related to Buddhist studies, giving them an opportunity to study the subjects more deeply, clarify their understanding of the teachings, and express what they have learned.

The competitions will continue weekly throughout the retreat.

Monastic Rainy Season Retreat (Yarney) โ€“ 2026
July 29 โ€“ September 10, 2026

On this auspicious full moon day, the monks of Ka-Nying Shedrub Ling, together with Tulku Urgyen Yangsi Rinpoche, commenced the annual Yarney (Monastic Rainy Season Retreat). Early in the morning, the Sangha gathered to receive the Yarney vows, marking the beginning of this sacred period dedicated to discipline, study, contemplation, and spiritual practice.

Following the vow ceremony, the monks performed traditional rituals, including the Zambala Chujin (เฝ›เฝ˜เพฆเพทเผ‹เฝฃเฝ เฝฒเผ‹เฝ†เฝดเผ‹เฝฆเพฆเพฑเฝฒเฝ“เผ‹), the offering of water to Zambala, the wealth deity, and circumambulated the monastery (kora), symbolizing the auspicious commencement of the retreat.

Throughout the Yarney period, from today until September 10, the monks will recite the Sutra on the Recollection of the Three Jewels (Triratna Anusmriti Sutra), make daily torma offerings, and conclude each morning practice before lunch with the King of Aspirations (Bhadracarya Pranidhana) dedication prayers.

For the monastic community, Yarney is one of the most important annual observances for upholding and preserving the Vinayaโ€”the discipline and ethical foundation of the Buddhist Sangha. While traditionally observed by monks and nuns, the essence of Yarney extends beyond the monastery, reminding all practitioners of the importance of cultivating ethical conduct, mindfulness, and virtue in daily life.

On this auspicious occasion, many devoted members of the Sangha community gathered to offer rice on the great mandala, creating merit and expressing their heartfelt support for the flourishing of the Dharma.

May the merit generated through this sacred retreat, and by all who rejoice in it, be dedicated to the complete enlightenment of all sentient beings.
