This week I returned to early medieval Ireland.

Not by travelling there, but by opening the first draft of the fantasy novel I wrote last year.

Every morning I've spent a few hours wandering through the monastery of Glendalough, listening to monks debate ancient manuscripts, exploring the forests that surround the valley, and getting reacquainted with characters I hadn't visited in months.

For a long time I thought rewriting meant fixing what was wrong.

This week it felt much more like returning to a place I'd been missing without quite realizing it.

I'm not writing very quickly.

But I haven't enjoyed writing this much in a long time.

Maybe every good story needs time to become a place you genuinely want to live in.

A simple video about decluttering gave me more to think about than I expected this week.

The presenter suggested that we often buy things for the person we hope to become rather than the person we are today.

As I looked around my own house, I realized she was right. The workout gear for the future athlete. The bread machine for the baker who would definitely make fresh bread every weekend. Even the pile of unread books for a future version of me who somehow has hours every day to read.

Then it hit me.

I'd been doing exactly the same thing with my life.

For years I'd been making plans for someone who always seemed just around the corner. He somehow had enough time to keep half a dozen YouTube channels alive, maintain every hobby he'd ever enjoyed, answer every email the day it arrived, write books at remarkable speed and still have time left over for everything else.

And somewhere along the way, I'd started measuring myself against him.

No wonder I always felt behind.

The strange thing is... that person doesn't exist.

Admitting that wasn't discouraging.

It was freeing.

Instead of chasing an imaginary version of myself, I'm learning to appreciate the person I actually am, limitations and all.

This week I finally sat down to prepare the rewrite of my fantasy novel.

My plan was simple: organize the hundreds of voice notes I'd recorded over the past year and start writing again.

Instead, I spent an afternoon listening to my own ideas.

Somewhere between notes about medieval monasteries, mythical creatures and the magic system, I realized they all pointed to the same thing:

My novel isn't really about magic… It's about creativity.

That brought me back to one of Tolkien's favorite ideas: that artists are sub-creators. We don't create the world from nothing. We receive it as a gift and shape it through imagination, craftsmanship and love.

What I’m really trying to tell in my fantasy novel is how stories, beauty and imagination can change people and, through them, the world.

This insight also changed the way I look at rewriting this book.

Maybe the rewrite isn't only changing the book… Maybe it's changing the person who's writing it!

I’ve started listening to the new audiobook edition of Robin Hobb’s Assassin’s Apprentice, narrated by Joe Eyre, and it’s fantastic! It pulled me in right away and gave me a completely fresh experience of the story. I’m loving every minute of it!

My Paladin used his knowledge of divine scriptures to rid the world of a nasty troll. Though I have to admit… my large, heavy hammer and a +5 Strength were far more effective than prayers 😅
