21st Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year A

Authentic Leadership: A Sacred Trust, not an Opportunity for Self-aggrandizement

In the first reading (Isaiah 22:19–23), Shebna, a powerful palace official abused his high office. Instead of serving the people put in his charge, he used his position to amass personal wealth and build a grand, extravagant tomb to secure his own legacy.

Today, many of our leaders, who are self-seeking mirror Shebna. They treat public office as personal property and for personal gain. They look at ordinary citizens as mere stepping stones to power.

Because of his pride, God removed Shebna and replaced him with Eliakim. God gave Eliakim the "key of David's house" to be a true, dependable father to the nation.

Centuries later in the Gospel (Matthew 16:13–20), Jesus asked Peter and the other disciples a personal question: "Who do you say that I am?" When Peter answered correctly from a deep, divinely inspired faith, Jesus entrusted him with the keys of the Kingdom.

The callings of both Eliakim and Peter show us that real authority is born from humility, deep connection to God, and a willingness to sacrifice for the good of others.

As we prepare for the 2027 general elections, this truth serves as a powerful mirror for us all:

1. Reject Political "Shebnas": We must say no to politicians who hoard our collective resources, chase heavy titles, and secure their own future while leaving regular citizens in painful hardship.

2. Choose Servant-Leaders: We must pray for and actively support leaders like Eliakim and Peter—men and women whose power is rooted in accountability to God and genuine love for the people.

Ultimately, dear brothers and sisters, we must listen to St. Paul in the second reading (Rom 11: 33-36) as he reminds us that every earthly position is temporary, and every leader will stand before the justice of God, from whom through whom and for whom everything exists.

On this special day, the entire parish community, joyfully celebrate and appreciate you for your tremendous sacrifices, dedication, and remarkable contributions to the growth and success of our parish. Your leadership, commitment, and pastoral care have left a lasting impact on our community.

As you mark another year, we pray that Almighty God continues to strengthen you in your priestly ministry, grant you wisdom, good health, abundant grace, and renewed zeal to serve His people. May He bless your efforts, protect you always, and grant you success, peace, happiness, and fulfilment in every aspect of your life.
