What's YMCA without August Camps?

YMCA Yola had a Pre-August Camp meeting, and as the name implies, it showed attendees what to expect from the camp. YMCA camps have always had one purpose: to equip the spirit, mind, and body of a young person.

And the recent meeting did just that. A prayer before and after the meeting (for spiritual building). A session that challenged our minds into thinking about strategies (for mind building). And then the YMCA treated attendees to meat and drinks plus an unplanned (but welcome) walk from the meeting point to where the refreshments were (for the building of the body).

If this pre-camp meeting is anything to go by, the camp itself is going to exceed all expectations. So do well to attend, or sponsor someone to attend instead.

🏆 Finalist Spotlight 6/16

YMCA Vision 2030 Pillar: Sustainable Planet

From YMCA Gombe, Nigeria, this finalist is restoring degraded land while inspiring communities to protect their environment for generations to come.

The Economic Tree Planting initiative brings together young people, women and local communities to plant trees, restore ecosystems and build practical skills in sustainable agriculture and environmental stewardship.

Impact:
• More than 3,000 trees planted since the project began.
• 160 people trained in nursery management, tree planting and agribusiness.
• More than 1,000 community members have benefited through restored land and increased environmental awareness.

This project shows how community-led climate action can restore both ecosystems and opportunity.

🏆 The winner will be announced on 23 July at the 21st YMCA World Council in Toronto.
