TOPIC: Good Appetite for God!
Matthew 5:6 (MSG)
You're blessed when you've worked up a good appetite for God. He's food and drink in the best meal you'll ever eat.
Hunger and thirst comes naturally to every human being. It develops an urge that makes a person uneasy, irritable, or weak, until satisfaction is obtained by eating. King David, in his Psalm uses a metaphor by comparing the thirst of a deer for the water brook to his thirst for the Lord. He declared, "I long to drink of you, O God, to drink deeply from the streams of pleasure flowing from your presence. My longings overwhelm me for more of you! My soul thirsts, pants, and longs for the living God. I want to come and see the face of God." (Psa. 42:1-2 TPT). Such powerful emotion and desire for God will definitely attract God's attention. Our text, extracted from Jesus' teaching of the beatitudes, aligns with David's passionate Psalm on longing for God as a necessity. Christ assures every child of God who is desperate for God's presence and pleasure, that such a person is blessed with a guarantee of being satisfied. The Amplified version of our text elaborates, 'Blessed and fortunate and happy and spiritually prosperous (in that state in which the born-again child of God enjoys His favor and salvation) are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness (uprightness and right standing with God), for they shall be completely satisfied!" The first step to becoming satisfied and blessed is deciding to turn in the direction of God, with our desire, disappointments, and discouragements. God wants his children to always long for His presence because He is a relational God. He wants us come to Him for fellowship, for wisdom, for knowledge, for direction, for help, for all we need. He desires to take first place in our lives and decisions. He wants to be the main object of our passion and affection. All we will ever need for life and Godliness is found only in Him. It is in Him we must choose to live and move and have our being. Beloved of the Lord, choose to develop a good appetite for God and His righteousness. Your longing of Him is guaranteed to end with you being blessed and satisfied.
