HOW TO STUDY YOUR BIBLE (4)

A poor attitude to bible study will make many say funny things, things out of context that the scriptures were not referring to.

Let’s look at a few examples.

“let the weak say I am strong... ”

Joel 3:9 Proclaim ye this among the Gentiles; Prepare war, wake up the mighty men, let all the men of war draw near; let them come up:
Vs 10 Beat your plowshares into swords, and your pruninghooks into spears: let the weak say, I am strong.
Vs 11 Assemble yourselves, and come, all ye heathen, and gather yourselves together round about: thither cause thy mighty ones to come down, O LORD.

The one who said that was making fun of people. People have quoted it out of context; it refers to the Gentiles, the enemy.

Proverbs 22:28 Remove not the ancient landmark, which thy fathers have set.

The ancient landmark is the same word landmark, to mark land like dividing land into portions and then mark it.

Each of the 12 tribes of Israel had land apportioned to them. He was teaching honesty; don't encroach on another person’s property.

This has nothing to do with doctrine,

“Give and it shall be given unto you” – Luke 6:38

Luke 6:38 Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.

In this text, Jesus was talking about mercy and judgment, not money. This explains why he said the same measure you give shall MEN give back to you.

False doctrine only thrives where people do not read their bibles.

I refuse to have a poor attitude to the scriptures.

What makes the bible holy is not the fact it has a black cover, what makes it holy is the information it contains. It is sacred.

2nd Timothy 3:15 And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.
Vs 16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

It is important to note that v16 says ALL scripture. This refers to the different books that make up the bible (Genesis to Malachi and Matthew to Revelation). So our attitude to the bible must be to study EVERYTHING and not a part of the bible

Joshua 1:8 This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.

Luke 24:25 Then he said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken:
Vs 26 Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory?
Vs 27 And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.

Notice again, “all the scriptures.”

Luke 24:44 And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me.
Vs 45 Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures,

Both the Lord Jesus and the man Timothy didn’t have a poor attitude to the scriptures. All we have are the scripture.

*Confession:* I read the whole bible and not a part of it. I repent of any poor attitude towards the scriptures and apply myself to bible study.
