PORTRAITS OF COUNTERFEIT CHRISTIANITY (CONTINUED)
2. BEING GOVERNED BY NATURAL AND UNGODLY APPETITES
Such type of Christianity promotes indulgence as against restraint. Here, people act like wild beasts and the right atmosphere is continually created to play host to their untamed appetites. They cannot behave normally anytime hunger or thirst exerts pressure on them. They live by the drive of their instincts instead of the leadership of the Holy Spirit. They lose their identity anytime a need arises or an opportunity presents itself for them to soil their royal oath.
They don’t care how they fare before God and do not sufficiently weigh the consequences of their decisions as long as they can gratify their ephemeral desires. These folks are called ravening wolves–once hungry, nothing else matters, but their need for meat (Matthew 7:15).
For instance, they won’t adjust to the ups and downs of the Christian race. Anytime they are down, they subscribe to short cuts, cutting as many corners as possible to remain afloat. They won’t stand the rigors of spiritual discipline. They always have a way of accepting the truths of God’s revealed word selectively.
Even the great God-King cannot lay the weight of kingdom responsibility on their comfort. Why? They are too fragile to be inconvenienced. However, no serious minded man or woman can amount to anything in the kingdom if they do not learn to imbibe the discipline of the spirit.
Bastards in the Old Testament were those without fathers. In the New Testament, bastards are those without discipline. The Bible says,
“And have you completely forgotten this word of encouragement that addresses you as a father addresses his son? It says, “My son, do not make light of the Lord’s discipline, and do not lose heart when he rebukes you, because the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and he chastens everyone he accepts as his son.”Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as his children. For what children are not disciplined by their father? If you are not disciplined—and everyone undergoes discipline—then you are not legitimate, not true sons and daughters at all.”
(Hebrews 12:5-8, NIV)
