BISHOP DAVID ABIOYE IS THE MOST HUMBLE MINISTER IN NIGERIA
At a public event years ago, a moment happened on stage involving three notable figures: David Abioye, David Oyedepo, and former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo.
Bishop David Abioye was speaking when Olusegun Obasanjo interrupted from the stage and said, “Go and sit down.” It was a shocking moment to many in the audience because speaking to a respected minister like that sounded very harsh and disrespectful.
But what happened next showed leadership and wisdom. Bishop David Oyedepo quickly stepped in and told Bishop David Abioye to allow Chief Olusegun Obasanjo make his speech. In a gathering where a former President of Nigeria is present, situations like that can easily escalate if not handled carefully.
Bishop Abioye simply stepped back without argument, without drama, and without trying to prove a point.
Think about it: he was the one speaking, he was the one publicly addressed in that manner, yet he kept calm and yielded the stage. That kind of humility is not common. Many people today would have reacted instantly, turned it into a confrontation, or used the moment to create unnecessary tension.
That is why many people say the job Bishop David Abioye has carried for decades beside Bishop David Oyedepo is not an easy one. Sometimes you prepare to speak, sometimes you lead, and sometimes you simply step back when the moment demands it. Leadership is not always about recognition; sometimes it is about restraint.
As someone once rightly said, Bishop Abioye’s humility should be studied in universities. In a generation where people rush to social media to react to every slight, his response teaches a powerful lesson: maturity, respect for order, and the discipline to keep the bigger picture in mind.
There is a lot to learn from that moment. Not every provocation needs a reaction. Not every opportunity is a moment to prove yourself. Sometimes the greatest strength is simply knowing when to step aside.
