ASSUMPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY. AUGUST 15

Today we celebrate one of the four great Solemnities dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, highlighting her unique honor in the Roman Liturgical Calendar. This Solemnity of the Assumption commemorates Mary being taken body and soul into Heaven at the end of her earthly life, to be with her resurrected Son and adore the Most Holy Trinity forever. This belief, long held by the faithful and witnessed by those close to Mary, was declared a dogma by Pope Pius XII on November 1, 1950, emphasizing its essential place in our faith.

The Gospel reflects on Mary's Magnificat, where she glorifies God and foresees all generations calling her blessed. It showcases her humility, her sinlessness, and her role in God's plan, culminating in her Assumption. This event not only signifies her eternal proclamation of God's greatness but also her intercession for us in Heaven.

Reflect on the Blessed Virgin Mary's journey, conceived without sin and assumed into Heaven, where she adores the Trinity and intercedes for us. This Solemnity is a joyful celebration for the Church and all the saints in Heaven. Join in this joy and honor Mary's significant role in our faith and salvation.

*LIFE AND TIMES OF ST DOMINIC*

St. Dominic (1170-1221) was a Spanish priest and founder of the Dominican Order. Here's a brief overview of his life and times:

*Early Life*

Born in Caleruega, Spain, Dominic was raised in a devout family. His mother, Bl. Juana de Aza, was known for her piety and charity. Dominic studied theology and arts in Palencia, Spain.

*Missionary Work*

In 1194, Dominic joined the cathedral chapter in Osma, Spain, where he became a canon. He accompanied his bishop, Diego de Acebo, on a diplomatic mission to Denmark, which exposed him to the Albigensian heresy in southern France. This encounter sparked his passion to combat heresy and preach the Gospel.

*Founding of the Dominican Order*

In 1215, Dominic founded the Order of Preachers (OP), also known as the Dominican Order, in Toulouse, France. The order was approved by Pope Honorius III in 1216. The Dominicans focused on preaching, teaching, and evangelization, with a strong emphasis on education and intellectual pursuits.

*Key Contributions*

- Dominic promoted the use of reason and intellect in understanding faith, which influenced the development of Scholasticism.
- He encouraged the use of vernacular languages in preaching, making the Gospel more accessible to the common people.
- He established the first convent for women in Prouille, France, providing a space for female religious life.

*Legacy*

St. Dominic is revered for his tireless preaching, his commitment to orthodoxy, and his role in shaping the Dominican Order, which has had a profound impact on Catholic theology, education, and spirituality. His feast day is August 8th, which is today
