🔥We persevere because grace
preserves us.
The people of God endure because the grace that saved them does not leave them to stand by the strength of the flesh. Salvation is entirely of the Lord, from the first awakening of the soul to the final keeping of the saint, and yet Scripture never speaks of salvation as a past profession that can be separated from a present life of faith. Christ does not merely call men to begin with Him, He calls them to abide in Him. "Abide in Me, and I in you" John 15:4.
The believer continues because God keeps him, and the God who keeps His people keeps them in faith, in obedience, in repentance, and in the holy fear of His name. "He who endures to the end shall be saved" Matthew 24:13.
Assurance is not found in remembering words once spoken while the heart has gone cold toward Christ.
A man should not comfort himself with an old profession if there is no present clinging to the Lord.
True assurance rests in the faithfulness of God and is witnessed in a soul that continues to abide, even with trembling, even through weakness, even after many battles. The warnings of Scripture are real. God uses them to awaken the careless, correct the drifting, and preserve those who are His.
Paul came to the end and said, "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith" 2 Timothy 4:7. He was not boasting in himself.
He was testifying that grace had carried him through.
Hold fast to Christ. The Shepherd who preserves His sheep also teaches them to persevere. (
