Postgraduate education at Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, is taking a new digital direction under the administration of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie, giving students greater flexibility in pursuing their academic programmes. While the traditional physical mode of postgraduate study remains available for students who prefer to attend lectures and academic activities on campus, UNIZIK has also embraced online learning as an alternative for students who live far from Awka, including those in other parts of Nigeria and abroad. Through the College of Postgraduate Studies, led by Prof. Emmanuel Chukwudebere Obidimma, students can access lectures, academic resources and other approved activities remotely, making it possible to remain connected to the University without geographical distance becoming a major barrier.
Eligible postgraduate students can participate in examinations and, subject to the University’s approved procedures, defend their projects, theses and dissertations remotely. This means that a postgraduate student living in Lagos, Abuja, another Nigerian city, the United Kingdom, the United States or elsewhere can continue important aspects of the academic journey without having to travel to Awka for every activity.
Also, proposal development, supervision research presentations, corrections and final defence, the digital system provides an additional avenue for students who may not be physically close to the Unizik.
The initiative forms part of the wider digital transformation taking place across UNIZIK through the Management Information and Communication Technology Unit (MICTU), under the leadership of Prof. Ikechukwu Onyenwe. Unizik’s digitisation drive has extended to critical student and academic services, including transcript processing, tuition payment, certificate collection, the UNIZIK Student Portal, Artificial Intelligence-enabled biometric capturing, proctored examinations and digital clearance for graduating students, among others. These innovations are helping to reduce dependence on physical processes while making University services more accessible, efficient and responsive to the needs of students and graduates.
The development captures the vision of the Prof. Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie-led administration in strengthening digital access across Unizik, with the College of Postgraduate Studies and MICTU playing important roles in the transformation. Whether a student chooses the physical mode in Awka or the online option because of distance, UNIZIK is creating more ways for postgraduate students to learn.
