Introduction
As Seventh-day Adventists, we believe in the importance of sanctification, a process of transformation that enables us to live a life of holiness and obedience to God's will. Today, we will explore the biblical concept of sanctification and its relevance to our lives.
Definition of Sanctification
Sanctification is the process of being set apart for God's purposes, involving a transformation of our character and conduct to conform to the image of Christ.
The Biblical Basis of Sanctification
- God's Desire: God desires us to be holy, as He is holy (1 Peter 1:15-16).
- Christ's Example: Jesus Christ is our example of sanctification, living a life of obedience to God's will.
- The Holy Spirit's Work
: The Holy Spirit is the agent of sanctification, enabling us to live a life of holiness.
The Process of Sanctification
- Initial Sanctification:
At conversion, we are set apart for God's purposes (1 Corinthians 6:11).
- *Progressive Sanctification*: We are progressively transformed into Christ's image, growing in holiness (2 Corinthians 3:18).
- *Final Sanctification*: At Christ's return, we will be fully sanctified, with our characters conformed to His image (1 John 3:2).
The Means of Sanctification
- The Word of God: The Bible is the instrument of sanctification, guiding and transforming us (John 17:17).
- Prayer and Worship: Prayer and worship enable us to connect with God, fostering sanctification.
- The Holy Spirit's Power: The Holy Spirit empowers us to live a life of holiness.
Sister White admonish
The righteousness by which we are justified is imputed, the righteousness by which we are sanctified is impacted. The first is our title to heaven and the second is our fitness for heaven (Mgs. to young people pg 35, pp73)
Sanctification is not the work of a moment,an hour,a day but of a life time. It is not gained by a happy flight of feeling but is the result of constantly dying to sin and constantly living for Christ. Wrongs cannot be righted nor reformations wrought in the character by feeble intermittent efforts. It is only by long, preserving effort, sore discipline and stern conflict that we shall overcome (Acts of the Apostle. PG 560 pp76)
The Importance of Sanctification
- Relationship with God: Sanctification enables us to have a deeper relationship with God.
- Witness to the World: A sanctified life is a powerful witness to the world.
- Preparation for Christ's Return: Sanctification prepares us for Christ's return, enabling us to be blameless before Him.
Practical Steps to Sanctification
- Daily Bible Study: Regular Bible study is essential for sanctification.
- Prayer and Meditation: Prayer and meditation on God's Word foster sanctification.
- Surrender and Obedience: We must surrender our wills to God, obeying His commandments.
Who Needs to be sanctified for Transformation
1. All those who are called by God 1pet. 1:15-17(Be ye holy for I am holy)
2. Those who believe in God. 1Pet. 1:18-25(He purifies those who believe in him)
3. All the worshippers of God. Jh 4:23(For the true worshippers of the father to worship him in spirit and truth)
4. All Adventist. Heb. 12:2, 1cor 9:23-27
Conclusion
Sanctification is not merely a theory,an emotion or a form of words, but a living, active principle, entering into the everyday life. It requires that our habits of eating, drinking and dressing should be such as to secure the preservation of physical, mental and moral health that we may present to the Lord our bodies as living sacrifices not an offering corrupted by wrong habits but a living sacrifices holy and acceptable unto God (counsels on diet pg165 pp77)
The scripture are the great agency in the transformation of character... If studied and obeyed, the word of God works in the heart, subduing every unholy attribute (Christ Obj lesson Pg 100 pp 78)
There is no such thing as instantaneous sanctification, True sanctification is a daily work continuing as long as life shall last.
Sanctification is a lifelong journey, empowering us to live a life of holiness and obedience to God's will. As we yield to the Holy Spirit's work, we will be transformed into Christ's image, reflecting His character to the world. May we pursue sanctification, knowing that without it, no one can see the Lord and there's no repentance in the grave. Make a decision today
May God bless you as you journey towards sanctification.
