Esther Nwogu has powered her way to the gold medal in the Women’s Lightweight Para Powerlifting event at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, breaking the Games record with a breathtaking 118kg first‑attempt lift.

Her compatriot, Esther Onyema, claimed the silver medal, sealing a historic Nigerian double podium finish in the 50kg category.

For Nwogu, the victory is the latest and brightest jewel in a career already adorned with international honours. The Ukwa West‑born athlete, who represents Abia State, won silver at the Paris 2024 Paralympics in the women’s 41kg event. At the 2025 World Para Powerlifting Championships in Cairo, she added another silver medal to her collection.

A devoted member of the Seventh‑day Adventist Church, Nwogu has consistently attributed her strength and resilience to her faith. Her journey has been one of quiet determination, rising from national acclaimβ€”she was crowned National Sports Festival champion and world record holderβ€”to global recognition.

Her gold medal performance in Glasgow not only amplifies her status as one of Nigeria’s finest para‑athletes but also cements her place in Commonwealth Games history. As she stood atop the podium, the Nigerian anthem rang out for a champion who has proven that faith, discipline, and relentless pursuit of excellence can move mountainsβ€”and break records.

Glasgow 2026 will be remembered as the Games where Esther Nwogu, a daughter of Abia and a woman of faith, lifted her nation to glory.
