When Should the Biretta Be Removed?

The biretta is part of traditional clerical dress, but it is worn according to the reverence and discipline of the liturgy.

During the Litany, and whenever the minister kneels in prayer, the biretta is removed. Kneeling expresses humility, penitence and earnest supplication before God; therefore, the head is uncovered.

The biretta is also removed during the Gloria Patri: "Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost…”

This gesture honours the Holy Trinity at a solemn moment of praise.

The principle is simple: when kneeling before God in prayer, or offering solemn doxology to the Trinity, the biretta is removed.
