BIBLE PASSAGES READ: GENESIS CHAPTERS 33 - 35
1. SUMMARY OF THE CHAPTERS
(a) Genesis Chapter 33 – Reconciliation with Esau
Genesis chapter 33 describes the long-awaited meeting between Jacob and his brother Esau. Fearing revenge, Jacob approached Esau humbly, bowing seven times. To Jacob’s surprise, Esau ran to meet him, embraced him, and forgave him. The brothers were reconciled peacefully. Jacob offered gifts, acknowledging God’s favor in his life. Afterward, Jacob settled in Shechem and built an altar, recognizing God’s gracious protection.
(b) Genesis Chapter 34 – The Sin at Shechem
Genesis chapter 34 records a tragic incident involving Dinah, Jacob’s daughter, who was defiled by Shechem, son of Hamor. Jacob’s sons reacted deceitfully and violently, killing the men of the city after persuading them to be circumcised. This act brought shame and danger to Jacob’s household and revealed the consequences of uncontrolled anger, deceit, and revenge. Jacob was deeply distressed by the actions of his sons.
(c) Genesis Chapter 35 – Renewal of God’s Covenant
Genesis chapter 35 highlights spiritual renewal in Jacob’s life. God instructed Jacob to go to Bethel and build an altar. Jacob told his household to put away foreign gods and purify themselves. At Bethel, God reaffirmed His covenant, restated Jacob’s new name Israel, and renewed His promises of descendants and land. The chapter also records the death of Deborah, Rachel, and Isaac, marking transitions in Jacob’s family history.
