BIBLE PASSAGES READ: GENESIS CHAPTERS 17 - 19 AND MATTHEW CHAPTER 9

1. SUMMARY OF THE CHAPTERS

(a) Genesis Chapter 17 – God’s Covenant Confirmed

Genesis chapter 17 records God reaffirming His covenant with Abram. God changed Abram’s name to Abraham, meaning “father of many nations,” and Sarai’s name to Sarah, promising that she would bear a son, Isaac. God established circumcision as the sign of the covenant, marking Abraham’s descendants as God’s chosen people. Though Abraham laughed at the promise due to his old age, he obeyed God immediately by circumcising every male in his household, demonstrating faith and obedience.

(b) Genesis Chapter 18 – Promise and Intercession

Genesis chapter 18 shows God visiting Abraham through three visitors. Abraham showed hospitality, and God reaffirmed that Sarah would bear a son within a year. Sarah laughed in disbelief, but God reminded her that nothing is too hard for the Lord. The chapter also highlights Abraham’s intercession for S***m, where he pleaded with God to spare the city if righteous people could be found. This reveals God’s justice, mercy, and willingness to listen to the prayers of the righteous.

(c) Genesis Chapter 19 – Judgment on S***m and Gomorrah

Genesis chapter 19 describes the destruction of S***m and Gomorrah due to extreme wickedness. Angels rescued Lot and his family, warning them to flee and not look back. He called Matthew, a tax collector, showing that God’s grace reaches sinners. Jesus healed a woman who had been bleeding for twelve years and raised a ruler’s daughter from the dead. He restored sight to the blind and speech to the mute. The chapter concludes with Jesus expressing compassion for the crowds, describing them as sheep without a shepherd, and calling for workers in God’s harvest.

Genesis chapter 16 shows Abram and Sarai struggling to trust God’s timing. Sarai gave her servant Hagar to Abram in an attempt to obtain a child by human effort. Instead of spreading across the earth as God had commanded, the people united in pride to build a city and a tower that would reach the heavens, seeking to make a name for themselves. God saw their pride and rebellion and confused their language, causing them to no longer understand one another. As a result, the people were scattered across the earth. The chapter ends with the genealogy leading from Shem to Abram, setting the stage for God’s redemptive plan through one chosen family.

(b) Genesis Chapter 12 – The Call of Abram

Genesis chapter 12 marks a turning point in biblical history. God called Abram to leave his country, relatives, and father’s household and go to a land God would show him. God promised to make Abram into a great nation, bless him, make his name great, and bless all the families of the earth through him. Abram obeyed God and traveled to Canaan. BIBLE PASSAGES: GENESIS 7 - 8 AND MATTHEW 4

1. SUMMARY OF THE CHAPTERS

(a) Genesis Chapter 7 – The Flood

Genesis chapter 7 describes the coming of the great flood as God’s judgment on a corrupt world. God instructed Noah to enter the ark with his family and pairs of every living creature. When the appointed time came, rain fell for forty days and nights, and waters from the depths of the earth burst forth. The floodwaters covered the entire earth, destroying every living thing outside the ark. Noah, his family, and the animals were kept safe inside the ark exactly as God had commanded. The chapter emphasizes God’s sovereignty, judgment on sin, and protection of the righteous.

(b) Genesis Chapter 8 – God Remembers Noah

Genesis chapter 8 shows God’s mercy and faithfulness after judgment. God remembered Noah and caused the waters to recede gradually. The ark rested on the mountains of Ararat, and over time the earth dried. Noah sent out a raven and a dove to determine whether the waters had subsided. When Noah finally left the ark at God’s command, he built an altar and offered sacrifices to the Lord. God was pleased and promised never again to destroy all living creatures with a flood, establishing a covenant of preservation and expressing His grace toward humanity.

(c) Matthew Chapter 4 – The Temptation and Ministry of Jesus

Matthew chapter 4 records the temptation of Jesus in the wilderness after His baptism. Jesus fasted for forty days and nights and was tempted by the devil to misuse His power, test God, and worship Satan. Jesus resisted each temptation by quoting Scripture, demonstrating obedience and trust in God. After the devil left Him, angels ministered to Jesus. The chapter continues with the beginning of Jesus’ public ministry in Galilee, the calling of His first disciples, and His preaching of repentance, healing the sick, and proclaiming the kingdom of heaven.

2. LESSONS LEARNED FROM THE CHAPTERS

6. God’s Word is the key to victory over temptation. Jesus overcame Satan by standing on Scripture.

7. Faithful obedience leads to greater assignment. After temptation, Jesus began His powerful public ministry.

DAILY BIBLE READING SUMMARY 2026

TODAY'S BIBLE READING SUMMARY (3RD JANUARY 2026)

BIBLE PASSAGES READ: GENESIS 5 - 6 AND MATTHEW 3

1. SUMMARY OF THE CHAPTERS

(a) Genesis Chapter 5 – The Genealogy from Adam to Noah

Genesis chapter 5 records the generations from Adam to Noah. It shows how humanity multiplied after the fall, listing the descendants of Adam and their lifespans. Although people lived for many years, the repeated phrase “and he died” highlights the reality of death as a consequence of sin. One notable exception is Enoch, who “walked with God” and did not experience death because God took him. The chapter ends with the birth of Noah, whose father, Lamech, expressed hope that Noah would bring comfort from the curse placed on the earth.

(b) Genesis Chapter 6 – Human Corruption and God’s Grace

Genesis chapter 6 describes the increasing wickedness of humanity. God saw that every inclination of the human heart was continually evil, and He was grieved that He had made mankind. Because of this widespread corruption and violence, God decided to judge the world with a flood. However, Noah found favor in God’s eyes. Noah was described as righteous and blameless among his generation, and he walked with God. God instructed Noah to build an ark to preserve his family and representatives of all living creatures, revealing both God’s judgment against sin and His mercy toward those who obey Him.

(c) Matthew Chapter 3 – Repentance and the Beginning of Jesus’ Ministry

Matthew chapter 3 introduces John the Baptist, who preached repentance in the wilderness in preparation for the coming kingdom of heaven. He called people to confess their sins and be baptized as a sign of true repentance. John rebuked religious leaders who relied on their heritage rather than genuine repentance, warning them of coming judgment. He also declared that someone greater than him—Jesus—was coming, who would baptize with the Holy Spirit and fire. The chapter concludes with the baptism of Jesus, where the heavens opened, the Holy Spirit descended like a dove, and God the Father publicly affirmed Jesus as His beloved Son.

2. LESSONS LEARNED FROM THE CHAPTERS

1. Life is temporary, but obedience matters eternally. The repeated mention of death in Genesis 5 reminds us of the seriousness of sin.

2. Walking with God brings divine approval. Enoch and Noah stood out because they walked faithfully with God.

3. Sin grieves the heart of God. Human wickedness in Genesis 6 shows how deeply sin affects both humanity and God.

4. God judges sin but preserves the righteous. The flood was judgment, yet the ark was a means of salvation.

5. Repentance is God’s call in every generation. John the Baptist’s message echoes God’s desire for a changed heart.

6. Heritage or religion alone cannot save. True repentance must be evident in actions and character.

7. Jesus is God’s chosen Savior. The baptism of Jesus confirms His divine identity and mission.

3. PERSONAL DETERMINATION BASED ON THE CHAPTERS

Based on these passages, I determine to:

(a) Walk faithfully with God like Enoch and Noah, even in a corrupt generation.
(b) Live with the awareness that my life on earth is temporary and should glorify God.
(c) Turn away from sin daily through genuine repentance.
(d) Obey God’s instructions wholeheartedly, even when they require faith and perseverance.
(e) Produce fruits that reflect true repentance and righteousness.
(f) Follow Jesus Christ as God’s beloved Son and my Savior.
(g) Prepare my heart continually for God’s kingdom through obedience and holiness.

CONCLUSION

Genesis chapters 5 and 6 reveal the seriousness of sin and the power of righteous obedience, while Matthew chapter 3 calls humanity to repentance and points to Jesus as the Savior. Together, these chapters challenge believers to walk with God, repent sincerely, and live in readiness for God’s redemptive work.
