80th IVC: Working to earn salary not good enterprise in Nigeria – Don

According to a don, receiving a wage in Nigeria is not a fulfilling endeavour. The university teacher said that although not all ventures are beneficial, doing business has its roots in Islam and comes with reward from God.
Suleiman Karwai, Professor at the Ahmadu Bello University Business School, said this while making a presentation entitled 'Building Sustainable Microhome Business: Islamic Perspective' at the famous Abubakar Tatari Ali Polytechnic Bauchi on Tuesday.
He said businesses collapse in the country because unqualified hands are entrusted with roles.
'Some people appoint someone who has no accounting background an auditor. How can he audit? The person you're engaging must have the know-how,' he said.
He said money is not the first thing one should think of if he intends to set up a business but an idea. He added that it takes passion and mission for a business to succeed.
'What am I going to produce which people would buy?'
He highlighted ways of managing a venture, including knowledge of the business, time management scheme, creativity and innovation, communication plan, exceeding the customers' expectations and sustainability plan.
He continued by insisting that Islam has business ethics different from secular ones. According to him, Islamic business principles come from the glorious Qur'an, Sunnah of the Prophet, reasoning of jurists and agreements by business parties.
The speaker also mentioned trust, honesty, excellence and professionallism as four pillars that make business stand from the Islamic viewpoint. He emphasised that complying with Shari'a is paramount in business.
He asserted that honesty, charity, and fear of God are necessary for business success and that a business runner should only engage in lawful commercial activities while avoiding dubious and forbidden ones.
