GOD ORDAINS PRODUCTIVE WORK

Memory Verse: "The LORD God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it" Genesis 2:15, NIV

Text: Genesis 2:4-10, 15

_________________________________
Rick Warren said, "Work becomes worship when you dedicate it to God and perform it with an awareness of His presence."

God Himself worked to make the heavens and earth. After He had created the earth, He made man and placed him in the Garden of Eden. In the garden, different kinds of trees looked good and were edible. The tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil were also in the garden. A river flowed from the Garden of Eden into four headwaters. When God was done with His own work of creation, He placed man in this garden not just to enjoy the beauty and food, but also to work. God did not design work to be a punishment but a sacred assignment. Purposeful labour has been a part of God's design from creation. When we work as He has ordained, we fulfil the will of God.

It is against God's design for believers to be idle. Genuine children of God must be industrious. We must not do our work carelessly. We must approach every work with the consciousness that God is watching us and checking our performance. Remember that God has ordained you to be productive upon the earth.

Insight: Whatever garden God might have put you in, take good care of it. You are ordained to be productive.

Prayer: Lord, help me to do the best I can wherever You have placed me.

*GOD'S COMPASSION FOR ALL*

*Memory verse:*"And should I not have concern for the great city of Nineveh, in which there are more than a hundred and twenty thousand people who cannot tell their right hand from their left—and also many animals?" — Jonah 4:11, NIV.

*Text: Jonah 4:6-11*

_________

In 1956, missionary Elisabeth Elliot's husband, Jim, was killed by natives of the Auca Indian tribe of Ecuador that he sought to reach with the gospel.

Yet, instead of hatred, Elisabeth continued to live among them and share God's love and compassion. In 1958, the same people who took her husband's life came to know God.

God's decision to preserve the people of Nineveh after they repented made Jonah upset.

He went outside the city, waiting to see what would happen. God caused a leafy plant to grow and provide shade for him, which made him happy.

But the next day, God destroyed the shade and Jonah became exposed to the heat of the sun.

This made him very uncomfortable and angry. God then confronted him on his attitude towards a plant that grew in one day.

Jonah cared about the plant because it provided shade for him, but could not extend the same compassion to the over 120,000 people in Nineveh.

Some believers find it difficult to extend the same grace that they have enjoyed to others, especially when they feel like such people are undeserving.

We must always remember that God's compassion is available for everyone willing to repent.

God expects us to be like Him in compassion. Choose to show godly compassion to someone today.

*Insight:* God has compassion for all people, regardless of their past wrongs.

*Prayer:* Father, help me to show Your compassion to people in my community.

RBT Passage: 1 Chronicles 10-12

A SEASON OF NATIONAL REPENTANCE

Memory Verse: "The Ninevites believed in God. A fast was proclaimed, and all of them, from the greatest to the least, put on sackcloth" Jonah 3:5, NIV

Text: Jonah 3:1-5

_______________________________
A. T. Pierson said, "There has never been a spiritual awakening in any country or locality that did not begin in united prayer." True national change begins when a nation turns its heart towards God in humility. When people repent, heaven responds. However, people cannot repent of their sins unless they are convicted by God's Word.

In today's passage, God gave Jonah a second chance to take His Word to Nineveh. The prophet told the people of Nineveh of their impending doom in 40 days. The people believed God, declared a fast, and put on mourning clothes. Even the king joined in the fast, and the people prayed that God would have compassion on their nation. God saw their true repentance and had compassion on the city. He averted the destruction that was supposed to come upon Nineveh.

Many nations need to come into a season of national repentance because of the corruption and unrighteousness that pervade their land. However, many people in these nations do not know the Word of God that can convict them of their sins and bring them to repentance. Therefore, Christians must share the Word of God with the unrighteous in their nation without reluctance. Decide to share the Word of God with someone in your community today.

_______________________________
Insight: The Word of God is the only instrument that can bring national repentance.

Prayer: O Lord, help all Your children to hear You and repent.

RBT Passage: 1 Chronicles 7-9

OUR CITIZENSHIP IS IN HEAVEN

Memory Verse: "But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ" Philippians 3:20, NIV

Text: Philippians 3:17-21.

_________________________________
There was a young man who lived in a foreign land and had a lucrative job. Despite his huge earnings, he lived modestly. One day, his friend approached him to ask what he did with his money. He answered cheerfully that he had been investing his money in his home country because he planned to return home after his stay in the foreign land.

The Bible makes it clear that our citizenship is in heaven and we are only pilgrims on earth. However, the way many Christians struggle for earthly possessions and positions does not show that they understand this truth. We cannot focus on the same things as those who belong to this world. For citizens of this world, "their destiny is destruction, their god is their stomach, and their glory is in their shame. Their mind is on earthly things" (v. 19). For heavenly citizens, our mind and passion are on the expansion of the kingdom of God rather than personal glory.

Are you living like someone who is eagerly awaiting the coming of our Saviour? Your passion and focus will reflect whether you are a citizen of heaven or a citizen of this world. Genuinely search your heart to discover where your focus lies.

Insight: The heavenly citizens live like those on transit to their Father's Kingdom.

RBT Passage: 1 Chronicles 5-6

GOD IS SOVEREIGN OVER THE NATIONS

Memory Verse: "Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord, the people he chose for his inheritance." Psalm 33:12, NIV

Text: Psalm 33:10-22

________________________________
The president of a particular country wanted to replace God in the hearts of his people. During the famine, he locked up some people and asked them to pray to their God for supplies. When nothing happened, he asked the people to pray in his name, and then flood the hall with food. He was later deposed in a coup d'etat and killed mercilessly. The people of the nation are still praying to God till today.

Today's text reveals that God is sovereign over all nations and that true blessing comes to nations that acknowledge Him as their God. Human strength and military power cannot save; only God can deliver. He watches over those who fear Him and places His care on those who hope in His love. The Bible also establishes the fact that God owns the world by creation and sustenance. Some powerful people had reigned or ruled with different titles like Emperors, Kings, and Presidents. They are no more, but God still retains His sovereignty.

Whatever may be the current situation of our nation, we must believe that it is not beyond the power of God. God is still in control of the affairs of the world, no matter the confusion, conflicts, and wars that may be going on. Worship this God now and commit your nation and the entire world into His hands in prayer.

Insight: God is the Ruler and Controller of the affairs of the world.

PRAY FOR THOSE IN AUTHORITY

Memory Verse: "I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession, and thanksgiving be made for all people for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness" 1 Timothy 2:1-2 NIV

Text: 1 Timothy 2:1-8

________________________________
Οn a phone-in radio programme during the August 2024 national protest in Nigeria, a man called and cursed the leaders. A pastor who spoke after him called the attention of the previous caller to his wrong deed and used the opportunity to educate others not to curse those in authority but to pray for them.

The text today encourages us to pray and intercede for all, especially those in positions of authority. The reason is clear, leadership influences whether believers can live a peaceful and godly life. Paul connects this prayerful attitude to God's broader desire for all people to be saved and come to the knowledge of the truth. This shows that praying for our leaders is part of Christian maturity and evangelistic effectiveness. What pleases God should not displease His children.

Bad governance is a common experience, especially in Africa. This has brought untold hardship on the masses who are expected to enjoy the dividends of good governance. However, we must always remember that praying for our leaders is praying for ourselves because we will experience peace and prosperity when they govern rightly. Do not join those cursing the nation or those in authority. You should rather correct this bad attitude. You can even form a prayer team to be praying for your country and those in authority. This is good and pleasing to God.

________________________________
Insight: Praying for leaders is part of a believer's responsibility.

Prayer: Lord, grant me the grace to constantly pray for my leaders.

*GOD'S OWN PEOPLE*

*Memory verse:* "But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's special possession that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light."
— 1 Peter 2:9, NIV

*Text:: 1 Peter 2:4-12*

________

Mr John chose peace over retaliation when miscreants destroyed his property.

Despite his power and influence, as one of God's own, he remained calm and used the moment to share Christ.

His godly response touched many hearts, and also led to numerous conversions.

His actions reflected the true character of God's people which is peacefulness, and forgiveness.

Peter, in today's passage, reveals the identity of believers as God's own people.

Though once rejected, we are now chosen and precious just like the cornerstone.

We are a holy nation, a chosen people, and a royal priesthood set aside to give God praise.

Our new identity comes with the responsibility to live a holy life.

Holiness is an uncompromising nature of God. It is a demand from God for His people: just as he who called you is holy, be holy in all you do.

God's own people must behave in a way to make the people around them praise their God.

We must show forth our royal priesthood position in holiness and godliness.

We are called to be God's people. Let us show the world the true character of God by our lifestyle.

The world will remain in darkness until the people of God switch on the light in them.

Let your life make people around you praise your God.

*Insight:* Let your light shine to dislodge darkness around me.

*Prayer:* Father, rekindle Your light in me so that people around me may come to Your salvation.

SEEK THE WELFARE OF THE CITY

Memory Verse: "Also, seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile. Pray to the LORD for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper." Jeremiah 29:7, NIV

Text: Jeremiah 29:3-7

________________________________
Some people, though needed good welfare for Nigerians but did not support the August, 2024 protest because they felt that it might not bring the expected result. While some took an active part, some did not. Both sides sought the welfare of the country.

Today's bible text records God's message to the exiled Israelites in Babylon. Though they were far from home and living under foreign rule, God instructed them to settle down, build houses, plant gardens, marry, and raise families. Most importantly, He commanded them to seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which they had been exiled and to pray for it because if it prospers, they will also prosper. We are also urged to intercede and give thanks for kings and all those in authority, that they may live a peaceful and quiet life in all godliness and holiness.

As the light of the earth and salt of the world, if we want to live in peace and prosperity, we must work towards it. We must not join others to curse our leaders or country, regardless of the situation. We are enjoined to pray and not to curse. We are called to seek peace and stability in our nation and not otherwise.

Insight: As Christ's ambassadors, let us be vanguards for peace and stability for our country.

*TEACH YOUR CHILDREN GOD’S WAYS*

*Memory verse:* “These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children…” — Deuteronomy 6:6-7, NIV

*Text: Deuteronomy 6:3-9*

_________

Many parents today invest heavily in their children’s education, appearance, and success, yet forget their spiritual foundation.

While academic excellence and good manners are commendable, but without a solid grounding in God’s Word, children may grow up morally weak and spiritually lost.

It is not enough to raise smart children; we must raise godly ones.
Today’s text is part of Moses’ final address to Israel before they enter the Promised Land.

He emphasises that Israel must fear the Lord and obey His commandments for them to increase in all aspects.

Their love for God must not be private and also must be taught diligently to their children and generations to come.

The passage is also a call for God’s Word to be visibly present in the home and in children’s personal lives, forming a culture of godliness.

You cannot ignore this instruction. As a child of God, you must raise godly children.

If you are not yet married, make a commitment to God to follow this instruction in your future home. It is our responsibility to pass our faith to the next generation.

*Insight:* The baton of faith handed over to us must not drop out of our hands.

*Prayer:* God, help me to raise godly children who will also keep the faith.

RBT Passage: 2 Kings 19-21

AN INSEPARABLE UNION

Memory Verse: So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore, what God has joined together, let man not separate." Matthew 19:6, NIV

Text: Matthew 19:3-9

_______________________________
A Pastor who handles a divorce case between a man and his wife had to commit the issue to God in prayer. After a few counselling sessions, the marriage union was resolved and the relationship was restored. Marriage is a spiritual, mystical union that God Himself instituted. No wonder the devil takes a keen interest in destroying the institution.

In today's passage, the Pharisees test Jesus with a question about divorce. Jesus responded to them by returning to God's original intention: "A man shall leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh". He emphasises that what God has joined together, no one should separate. Though Moses allowed divorce due to the hardness of people's hearts, Jesus reaffirms that marriage is meant to be an inseparable covenant, not a temporary contract. He also teaches that remaining unmarried for the sake of God's kingdom is honourable, but for those who marry, commitment and faithfulness are non-negotiable.

Are you presently going through some struggles in your marriage? Is the devil whispering to you that the relationship cannot work as it is heading towards a rock? Remember, marriage is an inseparable union. There is nothing you are going through now that cannot be resolved if you humbly submit to the will of God.

_______________________________
Insight: Divorce or separation is not an option in marriage.

Prayer: Father, let there be peace in all troubled marriages.

WE WILL SERVE THE LORD

Memory Verse: "And the people said to Joshua, "We will serve the Lord our God and obey him." Joshua 24:24, NIV

Text: Joshua 24:22-28

________________________________
A church had been experiencing a series of problems that made it difficult for a pastor to serve there beyond four years. A young pastor started his ministry in this church with a week-long revival and focused on Joshua chapter 24. At the end of the revival programme, the entire congregation entered into a covenant with God and declared, "We will serve the Lord our God and obey Him". That brought a breakthrough to the church.

Joshua, in today's passage, made sure he did not leave the people of Israel until he led them into a covenant decision to serve and obey God. He also made a symbol of remembrance for the covenant they made so that the coming generations will not go astray. Serving God must be a deliberate and public decision, and accountability helps maintain faithfulness. Joshua understood that long-term devotion requires both personal decision and community reinforcement.

No one can serve God genuinely without entering into a covenant relationship with Him. A service to God has to be done in complete obedience to Him. If anyone is serving the Lord without passion and a sense of commitment, the person is not in covenant with God. Can you check yourself if you are really in a covenant relationship with God?

________________________________
Insight: God does not reconcile with people who do not offer Him service in complete obedience.

Prayer: I renew my covenant with You, O God, and vow to obey You till the end of my life.

CHOOSE WHOM YOU WILL SERVE

Memory Verse: "But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve.... But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord." Joshua 24:15, NIV

Text: Joshua 24:15-21

________________________________
Saquon Barkley once said, "Sometimes in life, you have to make a selfish decision and do what's best for you." Life is about decision making. Where we are today and what we are confronted with now are result of different decisions we had earlier made.

In today's text, Joshua called his people to make a crucial choice on whom they would serve as God. He pointed their attention to the mistake their fathers made at one point in time when they chose to serve foreign gods. He now called the people to make up their mind whether they would want to go the way of their fathers, which led them into series of problems, or they would make a different decision of serving Yahweh, the God of Israel. Joshua informed the people that he and his family had made a choice to serve the Lord. The text also underscores that choosing God requires total surrender, genuine commitment, and a clean break from past allegiance.

As followers of Christ, we are to examine our hearts. Are we serving God with undivided loyalty, or are we still holding on to idols that compete for our devotion to Him? Today, make a conscious decision to surrender your life to Jesus Christ totally and start serving him now.

________________________________
Insight: Making a decision to serve God is the best thing that can happen to any individual.

Prayer: Father, I rededicate my life to you, help me to serve you in truth.
