*WEDNESDAY, 18 OCTOBER 2023*
*TEXT: 1 PETER 1 : 13 - 25*
*TOPIC: BE PREPARED*

*1 PETER 1 : 13 - 25 NIV*

13:Therefore, with minds that are alert and fully sober, set your hope on the grace to be brought to you when Jesus Christ is revealed at his coming.

14:As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance.

15:But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do;

16:for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.”

17:Since you call on a Father who judges each person’s work impartially, live out your time as foreigners here in reverent fear.

18:For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your ancestors,

19:but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect.

20:He was chosen before the creation of the world, but was revealed in these last times for your sake.

21:Through him you believe in God, who raised him from the dead and glorified him, and so your faith and hope are in God.

22:Now that you have purified yourselves by obeying the truth so that you have sincere love for each other, love one another deeply, from the heart.

23:For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God.

24:For, “All people are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field; the grass withers and the flowers fall,

25: but the word of the Lord endures forever.” And this is the word that was preached to you.

*BE PREPARED*

Today's text is a call to preparedness unto holiness as we await the imminent return of Jesus Christ. This means that we should be alert at all times (vs. 13) and not conform to evil desires.

Rather, we should be in reverent fear of God so that our freedom should not be abused (vs. 17). Why? Because Christ has paid our ransom from the tyranny of sin with His blood and His sacrifice for us was not an afterthought but something God decided to do before the creation of the world (vs.18-21).

Therefore, God alone should be trusted because everything in the world will fade away (all accomplishments, possessions, certificates, etc) and only God's Word shall stand forever (vs.22-25)

*QUESTION:* Are you living in holiness or swimming in sin, thinking that religion and your possessions will save you?

*PRAYER:* Oh Lord, help me to know that I need to be prepared and live a life of holiness, in Jesus name. Amen.

TEXT: 1 KINGS 21:1-16
TOPIC: WATCH OUT AGAINST GREED.

An American multibillionaire businessman was asked why, despite all the money and wealth he had, he was still working very hard. He answered, "Just for a little dollar more!"

King Ahab had so many vineyards but was not contented. So he wanted to add that of Naboth because of greed.

Greed often results in covetousness, which is forceful acquisition of someone else's property or assets.

King Ahab killed and took over Naboth's vineyard. That brought judgement on his future generations.

QUESTION: Are you greedy for money, power, position or possession?

PRAYER: Oh God, deliver and protect me from greed covetousness, in Jesus name, Amen.

TEXT: 1 KINGS 18:1-16
TOPIC: YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE

When Jezebel was killing off the prophets of God, Obadiah, the king's servant, hid a hundred of them, fed and took care of them.

In the worst of situations, when it seems wickedness and evil have completely taken over, a child of God can make a difference. That was the case with Obadiah.

In addition, when God wanted to initiate the process of restoration of the nation, He sent Prophet Elijah to Obadiah, who had remained faithful to God in the darkest period.

QUESTION: How faithful are you in the current dark situation?

PRAYER: Oh God, in this dark era, use me to make a difference for Your glory, in Jesus name, Amen.

TEXT: 1 KINGS 17:17-24
TOPIC: BE FREED FROM A GUILTY CONSCIENCE

When the son of this gentile widow Elijah that was staying with died, she had a guilty conscience because she believed her son's death was a result of God's judgement for her sin, occasioned by the presence of His holy prophet. This is a conclusive proof that Elijah was not sent to the widow because she was perfect but by His providential grace.

Elijah prayed and God heard his prayer and raised the widows child from the dead. Thus, the widow enjoyed grace upon grace.

If you are struggling with a guilty conscience, to be freed from it, confess the sin to God and be assured that you are forgiven based on God's promises in Roman's 8:1-2 and 1 John 1:8-9

QUESTION: Have you been freed from that guilty conscience?

PRAYER: Oh God, I confess my sin(s) and receive forgiveness and freedom from any guilty conscience based on Your promises, in Jesus name, Amen.

TEXT: 1 KINGS 16:25-34
TOPIC: EVIL RE-ENFORCED

Almost all the kings of Israel were wicked and evil. This is not surprising because the natural order of things dictates that evil begets evil, except where God's grace interjects and breaks the circle. In the case of Ahab, not only did he continue in the ways of his wicked and evil father, Omri, his wickedness and evil were re-enforced by his marriage to an even more wicked and evil wife - Jezebel. She was the king's closest adviser and ally and used this vantage position to advance wickedness and evil.

Someone has remarked that next to salvation, the most important thing in one's life is your choice of marriage partner. That is why ECWA Ministers Handbook emphasizes that marriage is never to be entered into "inadvisedly or lightly, but reverently, discreetly, advisedly, soberly and in the fear of God."

QUESTION: Who is your closest adviser?

PRAYER: Oh God, help my wife to give me godly advice, in Jesus name, Amen.

TEXT: 1 KINGS 15:1-8
TOPIC: THE COVENANT KEEPING GOD

David, King Abijah's ancestor, was long dead and buried but God continued watching to ensure the fulfillment of the covenant He made with King David. Consequently, Abijah became king, despite his sin and wickedness. This was the exact favour King Solomon had earlier enjoyed (2 Kings 11:9-13). The lesson is therefore worth repeating and emphasising.

The God of King David is the same God we serve today, the Father of our Saviour and Lord Jesus Christ. He is the same yesterday, today and forever, the covenant keeping God. Invest prayers in God on behalf of your family and future generations and they will never be wasted because our God is a covenant keeping God who lives for ever and ever.

Hebrews 7:25 says, "Therefore he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them." That is why long after some parents have died, their children would come to the saving knowledge of Christ Jesus our Lord because the eternal God who lives for evermore never allows their prayers to go in vain.

QUESTION: Are you investing prayers for your children and future generations?

PRAYER: Oh God, help me to faithfully invest prayers for my children and future generations, knowing that they would never be wasted because You are a covenant keeping God, in Jesus name, Amen.

TEXT: 1 KINGS 13:20-34
TOPIC: WATCH OUT IN YOUR OLD AGE

We all need to watch out in our old age to ensure that we don't go off spiritually and be used by the enemy to destroy instead of build up the younger ones, especially ministers of God.

The old prophet had so much compromised with sin that he was very comfortable under the sinful and idolatrous regime of King Jeroboam.

God had to look for a younger prophet from the kingdom of Judah to rebuke the wicked and ungodly Jeroboam.

But instead of the old prophet repenting from his sinful state, he plotted the destruction of the young and godly prophet and, most unfortunately, the young prophet fell into his evil trap and was subsequently destroyed.

QUESTION: What role are you playing in the lives of the younger ones as an older, elderly Christian or minister of God?

PRAYER: Oh God, help me never to be off guard spiritually so that You can use me to build up and not destroy the younger ones, in Jesus name, Amen.
